So We're Working on the Sleeping....and....
I started using the Ferber method two nights ago to get my son to sleep through the night again. First night, he woke up at 11:30 crying. As per the book, I let him cry for three minutes rather than rushing in to "save him". Then I walked in the room, walked him back to bed and promptly left. All this without any fanfare, totally mechanical, etc. I didn't so much as hear a whimper the rest of the night.
Last night was night two, and my son woke up at 9:30 crying. I let him cry for 5 minutes, then repeated the afore mentioned process. At 11:30 he was up again and this time came to to the door screaming out "Mama" as angry as can be and pounding at the door. I let him do that for 7 minutes, then as I was getting up to go put him back down, I could hear him padding back to his bed and then complete silence. He didn't wake back up until 7 am.
So I am feeling pretty good about this and seeing some results, and then wouldn't you know it.....my son starts to get a little cold this afternoon. By the time I put him to bed he had a fever of 102 and was exhausted. I dosed him up with Tylenol, but now am wondering what the heck to do if he wakes up crying? I mean, he is sick....yikes.
My husband said to let him cry if he wakes up before the Tylenol's effects run out which is about 4 hours (and when he takes meds for a fever during the day, the child is up & running, good as new....no pity parties for himself) but to go in if he is due for another dose. This sounds fair enough. I hate to undo what we have worked on these past few days.....but I am a freakin softy when my kid isn't feeling well. Man, Murphy's Law sucks. We move our kid to a toddler bed and he gets the stomach flu, now we are Ferberizing and he gets a cold. I am gonna lose my mind one of these days......
