Smitten, badly, by Maimi-Abe single

Radreview's picture

Not since ZYX’s “Shiroi Tokyo” have I been so blown away by a song as by the new Maimi-Abe single, “16sai no Koi Nante”.

Maimi of °C-ute.

It is classy, dreamy, with Broadway-style phrase lines and a smooth, running rhythmic pattern with just enough percussive punch to make it huge winner. Bluesy keyboard thrown in for good measure completes this masterpiece. This is syncopated heaven.

Of course, I can’t yet comment on the topic of this song because my language handicaps remain severe, but the feel of this is pretty overwhelming. Looking forward to the decoding process as my Japanese improves.

Hard to imagine a charter Morning Musume member, Abe, combining with a surging dance talent, Maimi, to create this unique splash of musical greatness. I would have liked to think that Tsunku had done it again, but, alas, I have learned this one -- the the Buonos before it -- was from another composer-arranger's hand.

I regret making any disparaging remarks about Maimi’s vocal abilities in earlier posts. She’s a great singer and collaborating with Abe will only make her greater.

Abe, formerly of Morning Musume.

As for the arrangement, again, full orchestration! This will be a bright addition to the Hello Project Awards Show (Jan. 26-27), if it is included which I’m almost certain it will! The instrumentation is not overbearing. It is perfect.

I have this on a continuous loop and I doubt if I will ever turn it off. Can’t wait to order it.

Finally, note the PV, if the DohhhUp! post is any indication. Two girls, just standing in line at a restaurant or club (can’t tell which). Nothing exciting here, until the song cranks up. Purists might be bored; I’m electrified. Imagine seeing these two on the street like this. Hey, it could happen!

Sometimes I feel I’m not deserving of these blessings. As the “Wayne’s World” guys would say, “I’m not worthy! I’m not worthy!”

This is Radicalipton signing off -- for now.
