Smart Ways to Save on Your Energy Bill
(NewsUSA) - The average U.S. annual home energy bill is $1,600. But consumers who get serious about energy efficiency can see that amount go down significantly.
Officials with World Energy Solutions (stock symbol: WEGY), an energy services company based in St. Petersburg, Fla., note that there are plenty of things within a homeowner's control when it comes to energy efficiency.
"Most energy efficiency measures will pay for themselves in five years or less," said Jeff Stokes, vice president of World Energy Solutions. "If you do not plan on being in your home for that long, there are also a number of measures that cost little or nothing, but will still provide significant savings."
* It is common knowledge that turning down the hot water heater can save on energy use. What's less known is that placing an insulating cover around the unit prevents loss of heat. And installing low-flow showerheads and sink aerators will reduce waste.
* Sealing cracks around windows is important, of course, but be sure to use curtains and blinds to control the amount of sunlight (and thus radiant heat) coming in, letting more in on bright winter days and blocking the intense rays in the heat of summer.
* Landscape wisely to control the amount of sunlight naturally. Trees and shrubs that drop their leaves in the fall should be planted around the southern face of your property.
* Turning thermostats down a bit will help, but consider purchasing a programmable thermostat to automate and optimize this process.
* You wouldn't let your vehicle run idle continually, so check around the house for those purring computers, warmed-up printers, charging razors and other gadgets. Put them in sleep mode; better yet, turn them off entirely.
* It's wasteful to do small loads in the dishwasher. Wait until you have a full load of dirty dishes.
* Keep your refrigerator and freezer well-stocked to maximize efficiency. The food will retain the cold and allow less cold air to escape when the doors are opened.
* When shopping for new appliances, purchase those that are labeled as energy efficient.
