Well, most of you who read my blogs, know that I live in a small town. Those of you that live in a small town also, know that not much happens in the way of crimes. I mean you have your occasional thefts from someones car, or barn, or someone is missing cattle, or a horse. Mostly here it tends to be DUI's and an occasional drug bust...yes even out here away from the city we have dealers. Nothing exciting.
Every now and again we do get something that is alot more severe than the usual stuff.
Last Friday night seemed to be one of those nights. You hear the sirens, nothing unusual.
They are more frequent from when I first moved here 15 years ago. And given the fact that I live right by the only intersection in town, I can look out my door and see which way they go, what they are such as police, ambulance, sheriff, trooper, fire truck or paramedic, or all of the above.
Well, last Friday the sirens started and I was watching and it was nothing but police, sheriffs, troopers and one ambulance. I mean these cops were hauling balls to get to where they were going. Given the fact that I didn't see one firetruck, that told me that it wasn't a wreck, or a fire, it was something a little more odd. I told my husband that either it was a high speed chase, a standoff or a shooting.
I ruled out the high speed chase because I could hear when they turned their sirens off, which told me it wasn't far away.
We knew it was something news worthy also because after all the cops, came the news vans, two different stations. I knew right there it was something big.
Come to find out by watching the 10:00 news, a 20 year old guy went to his step dads house to pick up something. The stepdad was out of town. Now, let me just say that the step dad is also a local cop here.
Apparently there was a burglar in the house when he entered his dads house. He was also shot in the shoulder by this burglar. The guy took off out the front door to get help for himself from a neighbor. After that I guess the suspect took off and headed west.
It has been almost a week and there have been no new breaks or developements with this case.
Now I know small town gossip is just how things are. I try not to partake in any of it, not my thing, however, I got a little insight into this "burglary". I am not the only one getting this information either. Several other people have been getting the same information. The thing about small towns is chances are there will be that someone who will, in fact know whats going on, and looks like our "burglary" may have been made up.
Seems as if this 20 year old got his second set of orders to go to Iraq and he didn't want to go back. So, he gives himself a self inflicted gunshot wound to the shoulder and proceeds to tell the officers that his dad was being burglarized and that he was shot in the shoulder by the suspect. He gave a description of the suspect as a 6 foot tall black man with a white t-shirt on and he took off and went west, dont know if he is in a car or on foot.
Now, only those of us in the town know this and no media knows anything about it possibly being a fraudlent story. I did read today in our online paper that they are ivestigating the possibility of it being a self inflicted gunshotas well as still investigating the original story. They are waiting for the ballistics report back from the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.
Now we all figure this will be swept under the rug the best way the police can do it, given the fact that he is the step son of a local cop. But, I know if the media gets this it is going to out there.
The one thing that pisses me off about the whole thing is blaming a black guy for this. Now if in fact this kid made this story up, I can only imagine how many black guys probably got hasseled that night around this area or outer areas even. I think he should be charged with something for making a false acusation. But right now as it stands, they are still looking for the shooter, ya..... whatever.
