Simplicity and Complexity

Bodies | Brighton | child labour | interesting facts

In our complex society we tend to think complex is better, or somehow smarter, regardless of the confusion it promotes. It has seeped into our work place, our families, our entertainment, and even our “basic” thoughts. How effective is the highly complex way of doing things?

Simplicity is quite…well, simple, but can we over simplify? Personally, I believe so. Certainly when we are referring to social issues, which involves many people, from many walks of life and beliefs, as well as different experiences. This adds a complex element, indeed, that can’t be ignored.

But where is the line?

We constantly create complex scenarios and schedules for ourselves, which creates a busy life style full of hard to track information, much of which must be tracked in our heads, jumbling our thoughts. The results bring forgetfulness, personal and professional mistakes, and of course - stress. Then we wonder why our lives seem so chaotic, seemingly unbearable at times. How much do we bring upon ourselves?

Maybe adopting some “simplicity” once in a while isn’t so bad. Instead of taking the direct route, straight from point A to B, we have a tendency of seeking out the most twisted and congested routes available, then curse, complain, gripe, and fume at how difficult things are. Many of our difficulties are our doing. We can’t control how someone else behaves, but we can make our own choices, eliminating, completely changing, or slightly adjusting what’s around us.

Life itself is very simple. Everything works as it should without confusion, or fuss. The stresses and complexities in life come from us, society. We do it to ourselves, and although we may not be able to completely eliminate it (unless you want to become a hermit), we can change key components in our lives, simply by making decisions.

Do we continue to carry the world on our shoulders?
