Should We Try for Genetic Perfection?

Wow. I just read an article in our local newspaper that a 'risk-free' prenatal test for Down Syndrome has been developed. I'm not sure how I feel about that. What do you think?

I'd never in a million years wish the birth of a disabled child onto a family. It's very hard and often tears that family apart. A child who needs life-long care is not what most people bargain for. Do parents have the right to avoid that at all costs?

On the other hand, I've known many, many Down Syndrome individuals. Nearly all have been joys to be around. Sure, they have some limitations mentally, but they also are among the happiest and most loving people in my world. Most of them are funny and sunny-spirited. They learn, they laugh, they enjoy life. They feel just like the rest of us do. They have relationships with others, and they lead productive lives, even if some others would call the lives limited.

Do they have the right to exist?

I'm very much afraid of where this attitude will lead us. I'm not sure where the line is. I've known some people that are born with incredible disabilities. They never show any awareness of their world. Some are in life-long pain and agony. Some have nearly nonstop seizures. I think most people would say that their lives are burdensome and that it would be better if persons like this were not born in the first place.

But Down Syndrome individuals?

What about those with cerebral palsy? What about those born blind or deaf? What about autistic persons?

Exactly what is our definition of a life worth living?

I fear for our world, to tell you the truth. I'm afraid that if we take the most disabled persons out of our lives, that the next most disabled persons will become the new 'horrors.' Then I'm afraid when we eliminate that level that the new lowest functioning persons will be next. Where will it end?

Would I, with my asthma, high cholesterol, and very poor vision, have a right to exist or would I be deemed 'too handicapped'?

Where does it end?
