Should PROSTITUTION be legalized?
Should prostitution be legal?
This is a question that our nation has been debating heavily since 1992. Liberal feminists at the United Nations insist that the legalization of prostitution is a solution. They argue that it would empower women and that it is unfair to tell a person what field they are allowed to work in. Other parties claim that legalizing prostitution will have serious effects on the economy; spread of disease and ruined marriages, not to mention the fact that prostitution conflicts with many religious beliefs.
Outraged parents protest fearing that their children will fall victim to prostitution. Wendy Wright, representing Concerned Women for America states "Anyone who considers legalizing prostitution as a solution to sexual trafficking or poverty should be required to learn what prostitutes endure," said "No one wants their daughter to grow up to be sexually abused, so we shouldn't legitimize the abuse of other people's daughters."
Meanwhile a third party argument exists; “how is it fair?" Howard Stimson asks the question, “Why should I have to go to work every day and have the government take a quarter of my check for taxes when somebody else is living totally tax free?"
A woman from Ohio states, “I am a mother of four. I can’t imagine raising my children in an environment where prostitution is legal. There is all ready enough sex on television as it is." She continues to add, “I want my sons to respect women and treat them with dignity."
Taking an opposing point of view, Paul Armentano writes, “Prostitution may be the world's oldest profession, and laws prohibiting prostitution may well be the oldest example of government regulation and government (sex) discrimination. In a free society, however, all such laws are inappropriate because they violate the basic rights and liberties of the individuals involved."
Edward Tabash from Freedom USA: agrees;
If we, as a society, really care about women, we will not only provide them with equal rights and opportunity, but we will stop turning some of them into criminals merely because they have chosen to exchange sex for money. Women, who, for whatever reason, choose to engage in prostitution, do not need to be incarcerated for their own good. The old argument of whether I would want my wife, daughter or sister to become a prostitute has nothing to do with the fact that women who do become prostitutes should not be thrown in jail.
