Should Bloggers Hijack Other Bloggers Blogs?

Submitted by gracepub on October 28, 2007 - 11:38am.

One of the differences in the optimization world and the marketing world is the content of a blog itself. Yes content is good, and yes replies are good.

This conversation was started at WU and Bloggerparty. It was an issue at blogger.com who sided with bloggers and created a moderation tool to allow blog owners to delete unwanted comments. Wordpress also has this tool.

The question is Is a blogger morally obligated to accept every reply to their post?

After much heated debate at WU, I decided that I would no longer let people use my blog to cause arguments, flame and slander, or go off topic. I decided that if I had a topic worth talking about, and I was using relevant information, that I had no moral or ethical responsibility to accept every post - especially those that went off topic and made it difficult for people to discuss a single topic.

I am not talking about people who contradict me. You'll find many blog posts where people contradict me, including a link to an article, or a quote, that proves their point.

I mean, unless you study ancient religions, don't tell me that the Saxon bible, my choice of scripture, is a bunch of bull - because you've never read it, and you have no idea why I prefer it. (Okay, so that is a weird example, but I can't think of a better one.)

But, if you want to debate SEO practices - I LOVE that...just don't recite evergreen content you found on a friend's blog - give me something from a national SEO or marketing association - Time or Entrepreneur magazine..at the least.

I don't want to start a fight about this, I would just like to know what you think. I believe that my recent blog posts bring up the need for a few comments and opinions on this.

I know that some people leave my blog and never come back because I didn't let them call me an 'idiot' just because - without any proof. Especially as I hate being called an idiot at 3am by someone who bases their opinion on the fact they are currently drinking their fifth shot.

I love cyberspace, and the blogsphere is my home, but the rules are vague. I've watched a few of the religious topics here be totally bushwhacked by people who have no interest in the author's ideas and topic - they just want to rant. I don't think that is right.

What do you think?

blogger and the topic at hand...I don't like to delete ANYTHING...but then again I have been burnt a couple of times. If I disagree with someone on MY blog than more often than not I allow them to rant, then I prove them wrong and Voila! No more issue. If it's a blog about religion and someone comes to blab about how they bake cookies...I simply steer them back to my topic ..."Cookies are really good when eaten in church" See? It's not that big a deal...at least to me.

Gracepub, I think this is an issue-by-issue

kind of thing. Sometimes having someone steer the blog off-topic is more of a problem than other times. Just depends on the original topic, the tone of the comments, the degree of disruption they cause, etc., etc. And it also depends on how you - the owner of that blog - feel about the comment. I do not believe that you are obligated to accept every reply to your posts and you are also not obligated to explain yourself. It's your post, your work and what you choose to accept in the way of interaction is your business. It's not like anyone is paying (you or anyone else) for the priviledge of reading your posts. Now, if I were to pay a subscription fee and then have my comments deleted, I might have a different opinion.

Note: Oops. I had an extra 'not' in here that might have made my meaning a tad unclear. I took it out but want to reiterate, I do not believe that you are under any obligation to accept every comment on your own posts. I think you have the right to delete those you find off-topic, off-color, or for whatever reason. It's your post and you should be the boss.

because not everyone thinks of when a blog might be hijacked, as you say, and just how many messages would one be willing to erase? Truthfully, I think that, unless it gets extremely personal, leaving it alone and letting people work through all their issues is actually better. As PW said, it's a free forum, and all those comments can't hurt you one bit. Yeah, it takes away from the original conversation, which you might have cared about, but just knowing that people keep coming back to it can't be all bad, regardless of the reason.

Reviews of Everything, reviews and opinions of, well, almost anything!
