Scientists discover an earthlike planet in another solar system.

Astronomers have discovered what could be a "super earth" - the first planet outside our solar system that could support life as we know it.

European astronomers claim to have detected a cold rocky-type world which may be about 50% or more bigger than Earth, circling a dwarf red star called Gliese 581, 20.5 light years away.

What makes this discovery important is that the planet orbits in what is known as a Goldilocks zone - neither too hot or too cold for life. It is apparently the best candidate by far yet identified for the existence of living organisms elsewhere in the universe.

It could have liquid water on the surface, which is thought to be a requisite for life, and it is also several billion years old which allows for sufficient time for an evolutionary process.
