With little chance of lights, camera, action in the near future, Sanjay Dutt opted for the chisel and saw as he began his sentence at Pune's Yerawada Central Prison.
Prison officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Dutt had already started on Tuesday with his carpentry and cane work in the jail. He went to carpentry division and spent a few hours. As an amateur carpenter, Dutt won't be shaping wood straightaway. He'll have to spend several days as a probationary carpenter before being assigned a project.
Inmates in Yerwada Jail can take up gardening, carpentry, cane work, bakery and other industries in jail. The labour isn't totally uncompensated and an unskilled inmate is paid a daily wage of Rs 12.50, a semi-skilled Rs 17.50 while a highly skilled inmate is paid Rs 25.50. The money goes to the inmate after completion of the jail term. Sanjay, like other inmates, will also get a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 which will go toward buying soap, oil and shaving razors.
