Wow, two posts in one day??? Well, I just couldn't help myself since I got to see this movie yesterday. It all began the other day after my brother's girlfriend bought a couple DVD's. We got to talking about movies we'd like to see and I said "I really want to see 'Run fatboy, Run!'." They both exchanged confused glances before admitting they had no idea what I was talking about! Er, nothing new there. {sigh}
But, as luck would have it, the commercial came on only a moment later and I pointed it out. As soon as Simon Pegg was on screen, my brother said - "Oh, THAT'S why you wanna see it!". And, much to my surprise, I found myself actually watching it yesterday!
'Run fatboy run' has to be the best movie I've seen in months! And, when I say that, I'm including movies by directors who I worship! Like, most recently I rented 'Big bange, love juvenile A' by Takashi Miike. A film that's over-loaded with enormous symbolism and quite brave in it's subject matter. Also co-starring Ryo Ishibashi in his SCARIEST role to date!
Or, 'War' - Jason Stratham and Jet Li in the SAME MOVIE????? If only they'd gotten naked in the film, this girl would be SET for wet dreams for a good long minute! **For the girls - "7! 7! 7! 7! 7!" ** {wink}
Or even, 'Infection' - the J-horror film that has me determined to make films in Japan!
'Run fatboy run' is a movie I'd watch everyday and not because I "secretly" hope that Simon Pegg becomes divorced so that I can marry him! The premise - a slacker/loser leaves his bride at the alter and later (when another man enters the picture) tries to win her back by running a marathon - is not the newest idea to come along. And, there are moments when ya just see what's coming. But, you forgive all that simply because it's so damn funny! Dylan Moran really shines as his best friend and fellow slacker. I'd not been too impressed with him in 'Shaun of the Dead'. He was a bit wooden (even dispite the fact that his character was supposed to be a twat) and I kind of figured he was cutting his teeth on acting with the role. But, here, he's quite beautiful and delivers big-time. Er, even though I seriously wanted to brush his hair throughout the whole movie!
**Side note to any and all Brits reading** What's with the tossled hair look?? That look is seriously over, so, um, please stop.
Anyway, Ain't it cool news reported in their review that "David Schwimmer's sense of cinema is almost totally absent." http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33907
I totally disagree! That it's the man's directorial debut and it works so bloody well, you simply cannot be anything but impressed! Even the score was "British cinema" enough that he clearly did his homework and listened to the right people.
I have one and only one issue with the film and it's so small it's hard to even call it an issue. I, of course, won't spoil it by revealing what it is. But, it regards the end of the marathon and I'm sure those who see the film will know what I'm talking about. And, even as my eyebrow was raised a bit - by the end of the "moment" I was filled with such oooy-gooey good feelings that I quickly didn't give a crap that it was obvious and contrived! I also loved the way it was actually ended. Call me an American snob, but if the film had been made here the prod's and the studio's would have ruined it by adding the nausiating and unrealistic American ending! Thank God it wasn't made here!
Go see this movie! And, after you see it, jump onto Amazon and order the DVD! If all I've said above isn't enough to convince everyone to see it right away I'll leave you with one final thought -
Simon Pegg having his "scrotal zone" molested by a manequin! {ahem} Nuff said.
