Music fans of the world, tell me this: is anyone watching this show? With all the reality TV out there to choose from one could choke on their remote, but occasonally there comes one that almost inspires watching. Rockstar premiered last season with 80's icons INXS looking for a new lead vocalist. I fell into the show towards its end and found some talented singers hitting all the right notes. This season they have formed something of a super group looking for that right person to front the band.
Gilby Clarke, formally of Guns and Roses as well as solo work holds down the guitar. Jason Newstead of Metallica handles the bass. And Tommy Lee of home movie fame and Motley Crew sits proudly behind his drums. They are quite a combination but I can see some powerful music coming from them. The real fun is watching the aspiring vocalists trying to attact their attention.
I caught the July 12th episode and watched a woman redeem her earlier performance with the help of Evervesence (did I spell that corrently. But after that I couldn't believe my ears. This broad, and I use the term quite liberally, floundered the night before with her tragic, techno-pop/ rock version of "You Really Got Me". I could almost feel myself slipping back to the early 80's when any idiot with a synthesizer could pump out what they refered to as music and get it on the air. It was obnoxious, tasteless, and horrendous. And please understand, I'm not a staunch traditionalist. I've enjoyed three versions of that song: the original from the Kinks, Van Halen's rocking hit, and a fun version from Oingo Boingo that showcases Danny Elfman's powerful yet whimsical voice. To fix her mistake she came back out and... sang the same damned song! She even sang it the same way.
When asked if she knew what kind of music the boys played, where they were coming from, she replied, "I was in diapers back then." What the hell was she doing there? Comic relef I suspect because there wasn't anthing remotely redeeming about her lack of talent and lackluster performance. I hope that the future weeks offer a bettter range of talent to make the nights more pleasant because she turned me off from the rest of the show. I might give it another chance, hoping to see the trio get behind their instruments and pound something out but not if I have to endure another night like that.
