Republicans Reject Raising The Minimum Wage

Submitted by ms zola on June 22, 2006 - 10:07pm.

Once again the Republican party proves they want only to help the rich. The working poor just keep getting poorer. In the last ten years, the minimum wage has NOT risen 1 cent. Gasoline alone, has gone from 94 cents to an average of $2.80 in Texas. Which means that people working for minimum wage could have purchased 5 gallons of gas for about $5.00 ten years ago but today they can only afford less than 2 gallons. I sincerely hope people earning minimum wages don't have to travel very far to earn that paltry amount of money.

WHile Republicans are insensitive to the plight or should I say blight of the poor, it seems the average American is not. In a recent survey on IWON.com they polled a cross sections of Americans and here are the results:

Minimum Wage
The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate smothered a proposed election-year increase in the minimum wage on Wednesday, rejecting Democratic claims that it was past time to boost the $5.15 hourly pay floor that has been in effect for nearly a decade. The Senate vote marked the ninth time since 1997 that Democrats there have proposed - and Republicans have blocked - a stand-alone increase in the minimum wage. (AP)
Are you for or against increasing the federal minimum wage above the current rate of $5.15 an hour?

74% - For

19% - Against

7% - I'm not sure

The results of this survey makes me wonder if the Republicans are completely out of touch with their constituants. Or maybe not ....just the ones who write them the BIG checks!

$10.00 per hour? Why not $100.00 per hour!

The minimum wage is evil. Employment should be a freely entered into agreement between an employer and an employee. Coercive state interference in the affairs of individuals is Communism, plain and simple.

If that's what you want, fine. Just come out and say it. Don't mince around and try to clothe your true goals with "feel good" hot buttons, like "what will the poor do?"

Regards,
Wolfgang

Ever Read Charles Dickens?
His books might give you a little insight into what the working class could expect before mandatory minimum wage. Am I a Communist? No, I'm a humanist.

I hate to say this, because I think the minimum wage should be increased, but I'm glad it failed. I want the Republican party to not only get voted out- I want them to never hold another job in their entire lives. I want them to have to worry about the minimum wage. I want that entire group of Republican Senators to cause people to cross the street when they walk past.

If the Democrats have one brain cell in their heads, this will be their issue. The very simple phrase, "The Republicans don't want you to earn a decent wage for your decent hard work." would do WONDERS! Why let the Republicans decide what our issues are going to be? I think if the Democrats could find ONE single issue, they could win this election in an embarrassing landslide.

Yeah, my contempt has gotten to that point. It's probably considered hateful by many, but strangely, I'm ok with that. :D

Wolfgang, you declare that the minimum wage is evil and say how it "should" be. Then you say that it's ok to believe that it should be raised. So you're saying it's ok to be evil?? The first issue is whether capitalism is even the best form of government or not. Since that has not been decided conclusively, it doesn't matter. It's all opinion anyway. And before you start with the argument that free enterprise is definitely the best- we don't live in a capitalist nation. If you think we do, we need to have a talk about public schools, hospitals, and roadwork.

The WORKING class needs to get out and vote! They can't sit back and let people who have never had to work for a living decide what is best for them. Patricians work for patricians.....let the plebians eat cake!

I have begun reading a book recently by James Carville and Paul Begala, called, "Take it back: Our Party, Our Country, Our Future." They suggest that people wanted to get rid of Bush, but the Dem's didn't give them a reason to. And their arguments are solid. So I say again. Let this be the one reason.

The Dems are their own worse enemy. They have missed a myriad of of real opportunity to oust the Republicans and instead harp on some useless detail or whine about some off the wall comment.

Instead they need to develop a solid agenda which will unite voters behind them. If they spelled out their solutions ofr:

1.The War which has cost America 2500 citizens of which 2/3 are 21 or less. And which profiteers made money on those lives.
2.The Economy including fuel prices and utilities...will anyone have any money left to support manufacturing....retail....etc....
3.Minimum Wage (most people aren't even aware the Dems make it an issue each year
4. Who is financing the "No Child Left Behind" text books
5. Joseph Wilson/Valarie Plame (Afterall if it can happen to them it can happen to you.

Stay on track with REAL ISSUES......forget the small stuff like gay marriage and such.....let the states vote on that.
