Remembering Jamaica

The first home that I remember was in Jamaica. I lived there between the ages of two and four and at the time it seemed huge. In my memory, the kitchen was next to my parents' bedroom and off from that was a huge, airy living room that opened onto a patio and garden. The house was my playground and it was also one of the places where I discovered the dangers of disobedience.

The patio doors were opened every morning and were held in place by two huge limestone blocks. I was fascinated by them, and the time came when I was big enough to shift them. My canny mother noticed this and told me never to move them. Being three, I ignored her and one day when her back was turned I surreptitiously moved one of the blocks out of the way. To my amazement, red ants flooded out from beneath the stone in an endless stream. Some of them stung me, and I learned a valuable lesson - that not everything my mother told me was designed to spoil my fun. I think about that a lot now, as I raise my own daughter, and wonder when she will learn that lesson too.
