Reason to get your bones checked

harvinder's picture

Osteomyelitis is a bone inflection that is caused by microorganisms. Infections reach the bone by the blood stream or from infections from adjacent structures. Symptoms are sudden pain in the bone, tenderness, heat, redness, swelling, and restriction of movement. Also a sharp rise in temperature, chills, rapid pulse, and positive blood cultures can also happen.
Early diagnosis of this disease is important, because later the disease is very hard to treat. Once disease is diagnosed, penicillin is given. Medication can be changed if the laboratory results show that another antibiotic would work better. It is important to starting treating before bone necrosis occurs. Once bone necrosis occurs and antibiotics will not work very well.
Infected bone is immobilized and the patient is maintaining bedrest until evidence of active infection passes. Antibiotic is instilled into the cavity daily. If the disease is in the later stages, the wound is exposed and all infected bone is removed. This disease in less common now then it use to be, because bone infections are found earlier.
