Pure Prairie League "Let Me Love You Tonight"

Pop Go The 80s's picture

Although they were influenced by country-rock acts like The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds, Pure Prairie League had more in common with acts of the '70s like The Eagles, Firefall, and Poco who had more pop inclinations. Pure Prairie League never quite reached the commercial heights of those contemporaries, but they did manage to find an audience, placing four songs into the US Top 40.

The biggest of those hits came in 1980. With the release of their ninth album, Firin' Up, Pure Prairie League no longer retained one original member. However, one of their newcomers was singer/guitarist Vince Gill, who would later find great success as a country artist. It was Gill who was the voice on the first single from Firin' Up, "Let Me Love You Tonight."

"Let Me Love You Tonight" was a perfect fit for soft rock radio with smooth vocal harmonies and engaging saxophone adding to its romantic feel. The song entered the Top 40 in late May and climbed steadily toward the Top Ten. Two months later, it peaked at #10 for two weeks and topped the adult contemporary chart, becoming Pure Prairie League's highest-charting single and a song that remains a staple on light rock radio.
