As a teenager, I loved watching awards ceremonies, seeing people honored for their accomplishments. Lately, I don't care for “industry awards. I've began to doubt that the entertainment industries are really honoring talented people with the Grammy Awards or the Oscars. It seems more likely that they are patting themselves on the back for a job well done. As you might have guessed, I'm a bit more accepting of book awards, and the Book Sense awards in particular.
The Book Sense awards honor titles that independent bookstores most enjoyed selling over the past year. The titles are selected by the staff and owners of the American Booksellers Association. The 2006 Book Sense Book of the Year Awards went to:
Adult Fiction: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (Little, Brown)
Adult Nonfiction: Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner (William Morrow)
Children's Literature: Inkspell by Cornelia Funke (Chicken House/Scholastic)
Children's Illustrated Book: Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth (Scholastic)
Four more 2006 Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Books in each category were chosen by members of the ABA. Winners will be presented with a plaque and an additional gift from Levenger, Inc. You can read the full list of award winners here.
