Is it just me, or is this show going very slowly? It feels like it's been on forever. Let me explain why I think this is happening, then get on to future predicitions, a look back at the past, and a phone call from Chloe!!
I think this season is taking forever because we all realize that Michael is going to win. I mean, seriously, the guy has never sent anything bad down the runway. And that's not necessarily a compliment, so let me turn it into one. Everything he has sent down the runway has been GORGEOUS!! The coffee filter dress was stunning. The Pam Grier hot pants were so hot that I want a pair, the whole time knowing that seeing myself in a pair of hot pants might be enough to send me to the loony bin. His clothes are hot, and they are innovative. This dude is going to rock the fashion world if he wants to. When you already know who the winner is and you are just waiting around to be proven correct, it feels like it's taking a long time.
Future predictions- Michael wins. Some mix of Uli, Laura, Kayne, and Jeffrey place, show, also-ran, and serve as the Fashion Week spoiler that we always have.
Angela, Vincent, and Robert are not long for this world. I'm going to stop mincing words right here and say it- they are dead weight. Vincent is too old and too out of touch with fashion today. Age does not necessarily mean you are unfashionable. Laura and Vincent are close to the same age, and Michael Kors splits the difference between the two. But they are a world apart. Vincent allowed himself to get trapped in the fashion past, and for fashion, that is a death sentence. Angela has too hard a time reigning it in, and while she could probably overcome it in the real world, she's dead in this fast-paced environment. Robert- I don't know why Robert isn't succeeding. But he's not. He doesn't want this badly enough, and it's showing.
Now to the others who will not win, but who will do well. I urge you to read what I wrote before the season started. It will give you a good basis for where I'm coming from with my assessment.
I stick with my Austin Scarlett assessment of Kayne. It's essentially the same thing that brought down Nick. They all make gorgeous dresses. No doubt about it. But there is no innovation. Just pretty. And as much as the world of fashion seems superficial, it's not. There is some substance there. You have to be the master of all sociologists to know what people want to wear. Frills and pretty will always have a place, but they are the superficial of the fashion world. And because of it, sooner or later, Kayne will go down.
Jeffrey is so cocky, so over-the-top, and so obnoxious that you have to love him. He's not Santino. There is something likeable about him (at least to me). But whether you think he has any likeability or not, he is going down. Why?? He is innovative, and the newspaper dress last night proves there is NOTHING superficial about him. He's got the construction of the garment down, and he can execute ANYTHING. He also has a thriving business back home with celebrity clients, and nobody can argue that he has the drive to succeed. So why is he on my out list? Because of all those things. What is he going to gain from this competition?? He's got a fashion line. This just gets him the publicity. And frankly, he survived the first episode, so he's got the publicity he was looking for. The biggest problem is that if I were sitting here telling him this, he would deny it, and he'd really mean it. He doesn't know that he doesn't need to be there, so he keeps hanging on.
Uli is STILL hard to read. I have to agree with one of Tim Gunn's podcast. If she is relying on her masterful use of prints, it's not enough to carry her through to a win. Maybe I am one of those people that can handle prints. I thought her dresses so far are pretty, but I have done stuff with prints that is far more complicated, and looks just as nice. So, I will admit that my own biases may be keeping me from being fair to her. I feel the same way about Diane von Furstenberg and her use of prints, and that's practically sacrilege.
Laura is still a one-note. Yes, it's a beautiful, well constructed, epitome of a well-dressed woman type of designing, but it is not fashion. Show me one innovation. Go back and read my comments about Kayne, because it applies to Laura as well. That's not to say that I wouldn't buy clothing from her. I would. It's lovely. But it's not innovative enough. I cannot imagine that the judges will remain charmed with her.
I still heart Michael. Go back and read what I wrote about him before. "Michael- right now, it's between him and Bonnie. He's got the background, he wants it very badly, and I think he's a good contender for it. I am really rooting for him. Personal style was a travesty, but he doesn't do menswear, so it's forgiven." Also, "My pic for winner was Michael, and I will tell you right now that his dress was gorgeous. The challenge was to make a dress from things found in their apartment, so everyone canabalized the sheets and curatins. He went for the coffee filters, and it was simply lovely. I would wear that dress on the street, any single day." Ok, so I was wrong about Bonnie, and I'm not even admitting that. Bonnie had the potential, but she blew it on that challenge. Before the show ever aired, Michael was one of my top two. Now he's my number one without a doubt.
As to the phone call with Chloe, who won last season. She was sweet (of course) and she really talked to me for a while, trying to get to know me and what I needed in my closet. More on what we decided after, but I think it will be lovely. Mostly, I am just impressed that she addressed all of my concerns and took the time to find out what would really work for me. It made me feel like a million bucks, cause in today's world, people just don't have items that were made exclusively for them.
