Please Steal My Car!

I just got a web release in which GEICO states that California has six of the top ten auto theft locations in the United States. I don't live in California, but if I did, I feel relatively certain that no car I've ever owned would have been stolen (see my entry titled "I Loved My Truck"). In fact, I probably should drive to California and park my current vehicle in shady places in hopes that it WILL be stolen so that I can get something else.

But, assuming that you might actually like to KEEP your current vehicle, here are GEICO's suggestions for keeping your auto safe:

1. Keep your car locked, even when you are driving.

2. Don't leave your keys in your car.

3. Park in busy, well-lit areas.

4. Don't leave valuable items in view in your vehicle.

5. Install and use a visible anti-theft system. Think "The Club."

6. Beware of the "bump and rob." Carjackers rear-end your car and when you get out to check the damage they steal it.

7. Don't leave the registration or title in the glove compartment. Car thieves who produce the registration to police when pulled over may not be caught.

8. Be aware of your surroundings.

9. Know where you are going and avoid high-crime areas on your way there.

10. Don't resist carjackers - your life may be at stake.

11. Etch your car's VIN number in every window. Thieves don't want to go to the expense of replacing all the glass.

Of course you should keep your car insurance up-to-date, and consider getting regular car insurance estimates to make sure you're getting the best deal.

I'm thinking of sitting the van in a dark spot with the registration and my IPOD sitting on the dashboard, with the keys in the ignition and the windows rolled down. Bet it will still be there tomorrow!

Disclaimer: I really don't want the van to be stolen. My insurance will never pay enough to get a nicer van. Sigh.
