Photos of my asian balljoint dolls

xenokitten's picture

For those not in the know, Asian balljoint dolls are highly customizeable, fully jointed, free standing, poseable dolls made of strong durrable polyresin material. They originated in Japan but have gained popularity in many countries including the United States. These dolls are not for children, they cost anywhere from 200-3,000 dollars and up.

It is an expensive hobby. The dolls come bald with no eyes or clothes and no face. You can paint your own face or hire a special artist to paint the doll for you for about $50 from the company, or cheaper from the community of doll owners and enthusiasts. You can sew your own clothes or have them commissioned. You can make wigs or buy wigs to fit your doll.

It's a fun but pricey hobby. It's popularity is growing everyday, but it is still very much a Niche market. The asian balljoint doll community often has doll meet ups, like grown up tea parties to show off their dolls. The largest of these meetings is Volks' Dollparty which has grown to include an event in new york and LA, as well as their original stores/events in Japan.

I own two dolls, a dollzone Demi and dollzone Mo. I painted them myself so they are by no means professional looking, but I'm learning and gaining experience and it increases my love for the doll, having done it myself.

Here are some pictures of my babies.
