Parents need to blame themselves, not MySpace for predators looking for their Children

I have seen several shows about how parents are outraged that MySpace is so easily accessible for sexual predators. I am a member of MySpace myself and use it to stay in contact with many of my friends. I don't have a half-naked picture of myself on the site either. I have seen pictures like that of several people. Many old enough to have them up and many not. I was happy when MySpace put in a rule that no naked or partial-naked pictures were going to be allowed because kids could get on and see them easily.

While you have to be a member to read any blogs, see extra pictures and various other things on the site, the main page of any one person is able to be seen if looking for them.

I digress though. After watching part of an MTV special this weekend about three kids going to prom and getting dates they wanted, I was appalled at what one girl was wearing. The dress was basically two oversized straps to cover the breast but not totally. The girl probably had to be taped in so she wouldn't fall out. The back was side straps that clipped together. It was totally inappropraite for a 17 or 18 year old. She looked much older than she should have. Imagine the dress J.Lo wore a few years back that got so much contraversy and you have a basic idea about the front.

Girls on MySpace are wearing things like that and much less saying how sexy they are, etc etc. So why then are the sexual predators trying to find them. Because they are making themselves prey. Young girls are dressing older and older at younger ages and parents are letting them. I want to ask these parents what the hell is wrong with them? Are they afraid their daughter will be mad they have to dress their age. Get over it, you are their parent not their best friend.

Don't blame an Internet site for your failings as a parent. Take some blame for what you are letting your child go out of your house looking like. If you are letting them look easy, they will be targets for predators.

Wake up!

I agree 100%

My husband uses MySpace to promote his music as he is a musician, and I use it to find and keep in touch with a lot friends I have made while traveling over the years. I love it for that, and I agree that it is getting a bad rap when really, parents should be watching what their kids are doing a bit better. Teen girls nowadays get away with looking like strippers and their parents don't even seem to notice? What is going on? I always had too much respect for my parents and myself to be or act like that when I was a teen. Not to mention my parents would have sent me to a convent! And as soon as my son is old enough to be using a computer, the family computer will be moved into the family room where my husband and I can monitor what is going on. You can't be too careful nowadays and blind trust is just not advisable when raising kids.
