Pablo Cruise "Cool Love"

The Southern California band Pablo Cruise epitomized the laid-back, soft pop of the mid- to late-'70s typified by acts like Player, Firefall and Ambrosia. Like those bands, Pablo Cruise included members who had a long list of credits, including former members of the bands Stoneground and It's A Beautiful Day.

Although their albums consistently sold and they even managed a couple of Top Ten hits in the US, Pablo Cruise never really became major superstars. Their 1981 album Reflector would be the sixth of their career and would be followed by only one more before calling it a day. However, Reflector would provide Pablo Cruise with one final hit song to show for their efforts.

Released as a single in June, "Cool Love" was an engaging pop song. With soulful vocals and a smooth melody, it suited the lazy days of summer well. Not exactly a ballad, the song still clicked at soft rock stations, as well as mainstream pop and even R&B outlets. In late July, "Cool Love" cracked the US Top 40, the band's fifth single to do so. Although it would peak at #13, it remained on the chart into the fall, eventually spending nearly three months in the Top 40.
