Outsourcing...stop the whining

Has America really come to this? We take actions that any history student would say is ludicrous. We cater to our own personal creature comforts at the expense of millions of other people’s livelihoods. And then, we cry “boo hoo” when someone in another country takes over doing a job function that we wouldn’t allow here because it infringed on our privacy. Good Grief!

I have read the endless articles with some American worker crying about how another job went to India. But it is that same worker who years back drooled at the corner of his mouth running to the computer to register his telephone number on the DNC List. Man, what a relief. No more pesky calls from those bothersome telemarketers! “And if one of those stinking bastards calls me again, I’ll sue him for $ 11,000!!!!”

Did anyone bother to think of the hundreds of thousands of workers who depended on their living on the phones when they did this? Is the only thing that matters our personal discomfort of getting some phone calls? Isn’t that what caller id was made for?

I was born and raised an American, so don’t get the idea that this is being written by someone in another country with an agenda. I was, however, in the call center industry for many years until the DNC forced us to close. We were a small center who could not afford to shell out the $ 14,000 for the privilege on downloading everyone’s numbers who didn’t want to receive a call, not to mention the additional thousands for having the lists scrubbed.

I realize it is pretty petty of me to be upset at losing my livelihood when it upsets other people, but instead of pissing and moaning like most other people, I went to India and lived there for a year to see why they took over.

Losing out of an industry to anyone else is what free enterprise is about. But, being shut down in an entire industry because people are bothered is another issue entirely. Hundreds of thousands of telemarketers lost their jobs. Single mothers who needed flexible hours, people with no degrees, the handicapped……..oh wait a minute……these people are all in a group that really don’t matter. That’s right, they’re not organized or galvanized by some culture or ancestry. No voting power. Screw ‘em then. And we did!

But, geez man, after doing the deed, don’t start crying bout your own job going over to India, several years after to cut the throats of many of your fellow Americans. I guess it’s only a matter of class then. If you’re one of the white collar set, then you certainly have an inherent right to bitch about an act you did yourself, coming
back to bite you later because you didn’t have the foresight enough to think that it would affect you.

I worked with a guy in the financial services industry after the DNC came into effect. I asked him if he cared that so many people lost their jobs because of it. His response was that he didn’t give a damn as long as he won’t be bothered by a phone call from another demon phone person at dinner time. He went on to say that if they couldn’t find another job, it was their problem, and he didn’t care how much he had to pay to support their unemployment bills……couldn’t we just not answer……but this is America, and I just want to feel good.
