The Geminian has read many attempts at defining Freedom.

There is a reason so many people have trouble defining it. That is because freedom cannot be defined. Many people have described their own personal definition, that is because they are forced to demonstrate my basic assertion.

Freedom does not exist, it is an idea which only has meaning in relation to something else. Freedom from: oppression, persecution, slavery, hunger, physical law, etc.

Freedom is the absence of something else. It does not exist, it only refers to the nonexistence of another thing.

Like Atheism, some say it is a religion or even pagan, but atheism really means a lack of a belief in a god or gods, as Theism means a belief in a god or gods, so Atheism cannot be a religion because it does not exist and only has meaning in relation to something else, religion or theism.

The word freedom alone means nothing, the idea of fighting for "freedom" is to fight for nothing. Even Braveheart's "Freedom" had meaning only in relation to King Longshanks. One might say Longshanks defined Braveheart's freedom.

As for "Absolute Freedom," it is also non existent and impossible, as absolute freedom too only has meaning in relation to something else. In this case absolute freedom would mean the absence of or non-existence of everything. An impossibility.

What does Freedom mean to you and does freedom exist?

Is Atheism A Religion?
