Only in America, the land of the free, hello?

Woman jailed for 'neglected' lawn
From our, ‘only in America’ file, a 70-year-old US woman has been left bruised and bloody after an unexpected clash with police who came to arrest her because her lawn was dry and brown. Trouble flared when Utah pensioner Betty Perry, 70, refused to give her name to an officer trying to caution her for not watering her lawn. She says the officer hit her with handcuffs, cutting her nose, although police insist she slipped and fell. Ms Perry said she was "distraught" after the incident. She denied that she was resisting arrest, maintaining that she turned to go inside to call her son to fix the confusing dispute. "I tried to sit down and get away from him," she told Utah newspaper the Daily Herald. "I don't know what he's doing. I said: 'What are you doing?' And he hit me with those handcuffs in my face," she said. "He's just trying to cover his tracks, as far as I'm concerned." A 70 year old woman beaten up by the Police for not watering her lawn, only in the land of the free, the home of the brave.

Doesn't everyone beat their old people???

That poor woman! No matter what happened, the police had no reason to be so concerned with brown grass! Don't they have bank robbers or murders there????

Communist America

I heard this story on Alex Jones' program. This is totally rediculous. How could this happen in america? The elimination of all moral values is the culprit of course. Seems that even law enforcement has lost it's moral code of ethics!!

Perhaps the police officers were...

off the planet?

Not that I support the police here,...

but in many American neighborhoods around the country, including in the city where I live, there are community standards, and one of those involves keeping your yard up to snuff. If we didn't cut our grass and someone complained, and we still didn't do anything, we'd get a fine. Now, I don't know about the police coming by specifically where I live, but in the city near where I live, it is the police who deliver the message. So, there you go.

Yeah...

but you wouldn't expect your grandma to be arrested if she didn't keep her yard tidy, would you?

If I knew,...

it was a condition of where she lived that it had to be done, I'd have it taken care of way in advance. See, that's part of the issue; if you move into a place and you know it has rules, then you follow the rules or you live elsewhere. For instance, around where I live, there are special communities that charge an extra rate for you to live there, and they take care of the grass, snow removal, and other minor things. However, their rules define what colors your house can be, what you can put on your lawn as far as decorations, how many cars you're allowed to have, etc. I decided I didn't want to deal with it, and I moved elsewhere, but many people are ready to conform. Those that don't violate the contract they signed to move into that community, and there are penalties they have to pay, including having to immediately move if asked. That's all I'm saying; I'm sure you have the same type of thing in many areas around where you live.

what the heck?!?!?!?

that is pretty ridiculous. i mean, i can understand if a yard is in complete disrepair and looks neglected or vandalized that someone from the city or neighborhood committee might say something about it, but the police? that's a bit much. after all, it's the woman who has to pay her water bill, not the cops, right?!

and man, this is obviously not happening where i live. apparently here you can not only have brown grass, but also jungle growth, dismantled cars, beer bottles & cans and basically a junkyard on your front lawn without anyone saying a darned thing.

I'm a Kiwi and we wouldn't tolerate...

an elderly woman being beaten up even if she attacked our prime minister. There are rules, and damn rules! Everything in context. Councils here have by-laws and citizens can get fined - but the cops have to keep their noses out of civil matters.

Right on, Hutt!

No one should ever attack or injure the elderly......well, unless they became flesh eating zombies. Then it's aim for the head time! She wasn't one, was she???
