Now The Race Card Comes Into Play

court | dog fighting | Media | michael vick | protesters

Well, I am reading the Yahoo news page today. The story is about Michael Vick and his court hearing yesterday, and low and behold, the race card was played in this story. Why??? I should have seen it coming, but, I for the life of me, cannot understand why this happens everytime.
What he is being charged with has absolutely nothing to do with race, at least it shouldn't.
Apparently the protesters against Vick, according to this story, were mostly white, and on the other sideline, the people supporting him and the fact that he deserves a fair trial, which I agree with, were mostly african americans.
Why does this have to even be a point. It totally takes away from the innocent dogs whose lives were cut short, tortured, beaten, the whole reason he is even in court. I could care less if he was orange with polka dots, what he did (yea I know, alegedly did) was so wrong, in so many ways.
This is not a race story, and that point should never have come into play, because that just creates a whole new problem for this court case.
When are people on both sides of the line going to just look at the situation at hand and base all judgement on that alone, instead of making a racial issue out of it. I get so tired of seeing and reading this. Of course, we all know that the media plays a huge part of this kind of thing, they love to get the ball rolling on things like this too.

I can answer this one, Ammorton,...

but you're not going to like it. Unfortunately, this is a racial issue, whether you wish to hear that or not. Dog fighting is mainly a minority run endeavor; not 100%, but fairly high. What you see is something that's just brutal, plain and simple; what they see is nothing much different than hunting, which is mainly a white endeavor. The only difference, per se, is that one is sanctioned killing because the people in power made sure it would be so, and the other isn't because that group of people has no real representation in government.

So, though you don't believe it, is is a race story. I don't support dog fighting, by the way, but as someone who teaches and studies diversity, and of course with my background, I'm going to be the one to tell you what you don't see, or maybe don't want to hear.

Unfortunately, in America, it is usually about race first, no matter the topic.

You know Catfish-I had heard that same statement

about dogfighting being found more in the urban areas and a minority issue. This may be true, but still doesn't mean that it has to be point and center every time. I also dont like hunting for sport. I thing it's wrong as well, thats just me. I think if you hunt and eat what your killing, fine, but if your doing it just to put something on a tropy wall, I dont like that at all. Dogfighting doesn't share that same theory with me. It is nothing but brutal, and nothing good can come from it. I know you know your stuff about diversity, and such so if anyone can enlighten me, it is you. I do respect that, and will take in anything you want to share with me on this. I still just think that people need to just focus on this issue-"dogfighting". I find it sad that we are still so divided as a people on any issue.

Yeah, it's a terrible situation all around, Ammorton,...

but look at a day like today. On one side you have Al Sharpton and Russell Simmons coming out against Vick; on the other, you have the NAACP saying not to prejudge until all facts have been put out there. I mean, this is as racial as things can possibly get, and the best we have going is one witness who's plead guilty today and says he's going to testify for the government. This should prove interesting, that's for sure.

Yea, I saw that headline yesterday as well Catfish

I thought "well, this is a twist indeed". It sure makes Vick and the other two look bad at this point. I hadn't heard that Al Sharpton,(whom I have a huge problem with)and Russell Simmons had come out against Vick.
You know, I find it sad also, that Michael Vick-who is to me, on of the best quarterbacks today, and has things in the palm of his hand. All the money and noteriety a person could want in the sports world, who had every opportunity to use his name, fame, and money in ways that might have bettered the lives of children, families, charitable organizations, etc... and he just threw it away for this. His greed of money, and they way he got "more", money doing this awfull act, is just a waste of a life. He could have done such positive things. I am sure he did some, but he just completely overshadowed anything he may have done. It's a shame.
