Newest Words in the Dictionary for 2005

Here are the newest words that have been added for last year, 2005, as given by Dictionary.com. Maybe, like me, you have not heard about some of them.

Atkins diet - it is a noun. It means a popular weight-loss system based on a high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. It also known as Atkins Nutritional Approach, or Atkins.

Brag book - it is a noun and is an informal word. It means a compact scrapbook created for the purpose of displaying or highlighting one's work or accomplishments.

Cat-sit - it is a verb. It means to care for a cat while its owner is away. You know, just like baby-sitting.

Dataveillance - it is a noun. It means surveillance of a person's activities through electronic data or the use of personal data systems to monitor individuals. Of course, a term like this has to be created. After all, we are not in a very technological world.

Ecoregion - it is a noun. It means an area defined by environmental conditions and natural features. It also means a region defined by its ecology.

Fan fiction - it is a noun. It is also called as fanfic for short. It means a fictional account written by a fan of a show, movie, book, or video game to explore themes and ideas that will not or cannot be explored via the originating medium.

Geek chic - it is a noun and is slang. It means fashion designed for or worn by computer enthusiasts.

Hawaiian pizza - it is a noun. And it means a pizza topped with pineapple and ham or prosciutto. I’m just wondering why this is just the first time that it has been really added. Well.

Intelligent design - it is a noun and its abbreviated form is ID. It means a theory that nature and complex biological structures were designed by intelligent beings and were not created by chance.

Job spill - it is a noun and is slang. It means any work-related task that encroaches on personal time. Something like an oil spill. Okay.

Kiteboarding - it is a noun. And it means the recreation or sport of riding a modified surfboard attached to a power kite for propulsion.

Lifestyle office - it is a noun. It means a workplace with different areas that may be conducive to different work styles.

Menuboard - it is a noun. It means a board on which a food menu is written. More of like those small diners where they do not have individual menus but a huge board where everything available is written down.

Nanoscience - it is a noun. It means the study of the performance of ultra-small structures, materials, and devices, usu. usually 0.1 to 100 nm. It also means the study of manipulating materials on an atomic or molecular scale.

One-hit wonder - it is a noun. It means an individual or group with only one success, such as a hit song, bestselling book, etc. Here, we call it “one time, big time�.

Phishing - it is a noun. And it means the practice of luring unsuspecting Internet users to a fake Web site by using authentic-looking email with the real organization's logo, in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information, or introduce a virus attack; the creation of a Web site replica for fooling unsuspecting Internet users into submitting personal or financial information or passwords. Haha. Just like “fishing�.

Quirkyalone - it is a noun. It means a single person who is happy to wait to find the perfect mate or partner. Are you quirkyalone?

Repost - it is a verb. It means to post or send a message again, esp. via the Internet or e-mail.

Search engine optimization - it is a noun and is abbreviated as SEO. It means the process of choosing targeted keywords and keyword phrases related to a Web site so the site will rank high when those terms are part of a Web search.

TiVo - it is a noun. It means a company offering a branded subscription-based interactive television service that lets viewers program and control which television shows they watch and when. Aside from that the service is also offered by this company.

Undertime - it is a noun and is slang. It means the time an employee takes off from work for non-work-related tasks. It also means employee's hours paid-for but not worked.

V-mail - it is a noun. It means electronic mail with a video clip attachment.

Water birth - it is a noun. And it means a mode of childbirth where the mother delivers the baby while in a tub or pool, designed to emulate the watery placenta from which it is delivered.

Xenology - it is a noun and it means the scientific study of extraterrestrials, esp. their biology.

Yowzer - it is an interjection and is also used as “yowzah�. It means an exclamation of delight or approval.

Zafu - it is a noun. It means a round thick cushion for sitting meditation, sometimes used on top of a mat.

I wonder if the word blog is in the dictionary?

i believe there already is a word "blog", although i'm not sure if it already in the dictionary. however, if you do try to go to Wikipedia, you would find a definition of this word. it actually is a combination of "web" and "log". shortened to "blog".

I don’t know what to say about print dictionaries, but the online ones have this word for a long time now. Well, is quite normal, thinking that those are online dictionaries!? :P Oh! And something else, There is not in dictionaries yet the expression of double glazed windows neither. HIHI!
