SHOCKING TEEN GAMES

Most parents expect to deal with the usual teenager/parent conflicts – staying out past curfew, relationships, driving tickets maybe even smoking or underage drinking. However, these days the internet has opened up a whole new can of worms. Teens are able to access millions of web sites, some containing content we wish they would never have seen. Teens all over the world are now able to share thoughts, ideas and even games. Some of these games are very horrifying.

Rescently a new game has been uncovered. It has many names, “Space Monkey", “Float Away", “Dreams",“Fainting",“Pass Out
Game", “Black Out Game" and “Airplaning" are a few of them. This game has been a cause of deaths all over the United States. A 14 year old named Alyssa describes it as “ A game where you get down on your hands and knees and put your head down. You breathe really hard until you get really light headed. Somebody then puts their arm around your neck and flexes until you go limp. Everything goes black. You wake up a couple minutes later lightheaded and tingley. You feel really peaceful and calm".

Alyssas' mother had seen the girls playing this game but thought they were joking around because they were laughing and giggling. When she discovered that this was for real she forbid her daughter to be choked. Alyssa says that although she enjoys the “high" feeling she gets from playing this game she will only be the “choker" from now on.

When this game is played Oxygen Depletion provides a brief high or euphoric state. This happens because the actual ‘choking’ stops the flow of oxygen containing blood to the brain. The objective of this dangerous game is to get the child who is being choked to pass out. Once the choking pressure on the arteries has been released, blood flow to the brain resumes causing a "rush" as consciousness returns.

Some of the side effects to playing this game are permanent and cumulative death of large numbers of brain cells. Also the variation in blood pressure may also cause strokes, siezures, and retinal damage. Recently many children have died as a result.

Although drugs, such as marijuana, are addicting, they are costly. Children have discovered that this is not only a free way to get a buzz, but they have also found ways to achieve this high when they are alone by use of a ligature. If the child loses consciousness and there
is no one there to immediately release the pressure, he is unable to help himself. The child will suffer brain damage and death after only three minutes. Some of those who have died were alone for as little as 15 minutes before someone found them and it was already too late.

If you are a parent and you think your child has never heard of this game or tried it, you may want to guess again. Appearing on ‘Dr. Phil’ was Sarah, a grief stricken mother who had lost her 13 year old son to this game. He was playing this with his brother when they decided to use a rope as the device to make them pass out. Not realizing that his brother was dead, Samuel kept tugging the rope.
Sarah is currently working hard to get the word out about this rapidly growing game. It is so sad that lives are lost to something like this. We all must take part in the prevention process.

What can you do as a parent, brother, sister or teacher? First you need to ask questions. Remember that you are the adult. Don’t become frustrated if your child rolls their eyes at your inquiry. Discover who they are talking to on the internet. Using your computer, look up which sites they have visited in the past (If you are unsure how to do this, contact your local computer store). Don’t hesitate to tell them to leave their bedroom door ajar. Watch for additional clues – bruising, scratches, headaches, disorientation, etc. Although, if your child is playing this game they may not have any obvious signs. Most of all, always educate your child. Explain what happens when they experience oxygen depravation.

This game is no longer for teenagers either. Several children, as young as ten years of age have died as a result.
