New hobby For 6 year olds: Binge Drinking?

When somebody say the phrase, “Binge drinking" most people assume they are talking about college students or other heavily stressed adults. In fact, most people don’t even know the definition of Binge Drinking.

Binge Drinking is defined as consuming 5 or more drinks in a row (for boys), for girls it is four consecutive drinks. A socking statistic shows that the average college student on any given night out will consume a minimum of 3 drinks. Some of these students regularly drink in excess of 15 or 20 in a single evening.

Today, binge drinking is recorded to begin at the age of 13. Almost 10% of youths polled between the ages of 12 –17 are classified as binge drinkers. Even worse, almost 35% of young adults, ages 18-20 fell into this category.
Consequences of these actions range from mild to severe, both short term and long term. When excessive amounts of alcohol are consumed, the brain is deprived of oxygen. The struggle to deal with an overdose of alcohol and lack of oxygen will eventually cause the brain to shut down the voluntary functions that regulate breathing and heart rate, resulting in alcohol poisoning. Symptoms of alcohol poisoning include, Vomiting, Unconsciousness, Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin, Slow or irregular breathing (less than 8 breaths a minute or 10 or more seconds between breaths).

Binge Drinking not only affects one’s health, but also one’s frame of mind. Binge drinkers have been known to miss school, work or other appointments. Often violence plays a big part in binge drinking. People, after binging can erupt into fits of rage and destroy belongings or provoke fights. A large number of crimes committed, including rape, murder and burglary have occurred while a binge drinker was under the influence.

Children as young a six, reports the BBC News, have needed medical treatment after a binging episode. By the age of 12 one in four boys will have been offered alcohol from a friend, or more surprisingly, a parent. If you think boys are the only ones tempted, guess again. The statistics show that one in three girls of the same age are at risk.
So maybe you aren’t the parent who is supplying the liquor. Did you know that Two out of three teens, aged 13 - 18, said it is easy to get alcohol from their homes without parents knowing about it!

“Alcohol is everywhere," said Steven Harris, a 14-year-old from San Bruno, Calif. "Young people see ads everywhere. We see drinking on TV and in the movies, and we see it at parties and at home. And it is probably harder for teens to get into an R-rated movie than to get alcohol. It's a joke."

What can you do to help prevent children from obtaining alcohol? Take some simple steps:
1. Be sure to always keep alcoholic beverages in a cabinet that is locked. Dr. Mary Ramsey advises to use the “Out of sight, out f mind" rule.
2. Do not support ‘supervised’ drinking. One out of four parents of children, aged 12 - 20 (25 percent), say they have allowed their teens to drink with their supervision in the past six months. Approximately one in 12 (8 percent) indicated they have allowed their teen's friends to also drink under their supervision in the past six months. Be sure to watch your child’s actions after returning home from a friend’s house. If he/she appears to be disorientated, clumsy or having problems speaking, this may be a sign.
3. Never buy for a minor. Policies and law enforcement efforts to stop minors from obtaining alcohol are important, but this data reveals how easily avoided those policies and laws can be when legal-aged buyers are the leading source of alcohol for children.
4. If you are aware of underage drinking taking place it is important that you contact law enforcement.

It is pretty sick isn't it?

It is apalling to think that such young children are binge drinking.
