NASCAR Rivalry at Texas Motor Speedway Spinout Country
As a Nor'easter spread thunder and lightning from the Gulf of Mexico to New England, we here at KZLAZY Country Radio in Lost Angeles, California were thinking of Skyla Spencer's "If I Were Rain," and hoping that everybody made it safely through the stormy weekend that the 500 was held at Texas Motor Speedway.
This was the return of the NEXTELL Cup Series after a weekend off so that NASCAR drivers and crews could spend some time with their families before the carhaulers hit the roads of America again.
Texas also saw the return of the Car of Yesterday, the preferred long-time ride of the points champions.
Thanks to the Fox television network I noticed that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was taching from 7,000 to 9,200 RPM,(!) attaining a speed of 190 miles-per-hour on the back straight-a-way, this after being taken out of the lead position that he had held for 96 laps by a collision with Tony Stewart who spun-around the width of the speedway for a second time.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Chevrolet had returned to the race with it's rear bumper missing but with it's engine still running long enough (wound tight at 9000+ RPM!) to finish 288 laps out of the 334 in the 36 position.
This was his Dale Earnhardt, Incorporated team car's best performance in the last few NEXTEL Cup Series races and shows a strong engine building capability for the rest of the season.
The SundayStockcars were very touchy and twitchy at maximum speed on the back straightaway at Texas Motor Speedway, all it took was a tap from another racecar (unintentional at this point in the race) to sent Tony Stewart spinning out-of-control and taking out Jimmie Johnson who was said to be running on seven cylinders. His car was T-boned on the passenger side, between the wheel wells and was able to return to run a few more laps to finish in 38th position,
While the two Car of Tomorrow races favored, Chevy, Chevy, Chevy...the car of yesterday continued to distribute the top fifteen positions: 7 Chevys, 4 Fords,2 Dodges and Brian Vickers TOYOTA. This also occured at the previous Speedway race; as the Car of Tomorrow introductry races were at short tracks. Is there some kind of trend developing here, that the dominant Chevy teams, Childress and Hendricks have the suspension packages to get the most out of the Car of Tomorrow?
