Names of God Part 1
What is it about crying out Abba..that just makes my day? God is my Ishi..my husband...oh the names of God are great...and they give his character..In my personal quiet time I'm looking at the names of God and their meanings...
1.Elohim
The plural of El or powerful God..and indicative of the Godhead. It proves that there is no finite word that fully captures the awesomness that is God..it also symbolizes covenantship. When it was used in the beginning...In Genesis the Elohim of God moved above the waters...creation itself is covenanted by Elohim for its redemption and perpetuation..in all its meaning for me at least boils down to a revelation of a covenanting, creative, governing, omnipotent God.
2.Jehovah
Dervived from the Hebrew verb havah, "to be, or being." Like the verb chavah, "to live or life"..therefore we think of Jehovah in terms of existence or life."The Hebrew may say the Elohim, the true God, in opposition to all the false gods. he never says the Jehovah, for Jehovah is the name of the true God only."(Moses Maimonides)He is the God of revelation. My summatin of the name leads me to see Jehovah as an absolutely existant God. In himself possessing eternal life, permanently existing and unchangeable. One who is continuous in his dealings with man, who's promises are unchangeable. The revelatory God, the ever becoming one who pronounces judgement and metes out punishment who is also love and redemption. The one who restores man to himself.
Unless stated otherwise the information was gathered from the book Names of God by Nathan Stone and from Names of God L.Dauphin but I don't use that alot because he's often off a little. However ..
