Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me"

Pop Go The 80s's picture

Although they were only together for two albums, the English duo Naked Eyes quickly became one of the '80s more popular and fondly remembered acts of the decade. Schoolmates Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher released their debut Burning Bridges in the UK in early 1983 and the album was reissued several months later in the US simply as Naked Eyes.

For most listeners, the introduction to the duo and their blend of New Romantic and synth-pop stylings came with the Burt Bacharach-penned "Always Something There To Remind Me." The song had already been a chart hit for singers, Lou Johnson, Sandie Shaw, and Dionne Warwick in the '60s, and R.B. Greaves at the beginning of the '70s.

It was Naked Eyes that scored the biggest hit version, though. With a shuffling cadence and chiming instrumentation, the song became the duo's first US Top 40 hit in April of 1983. It steadily climbed the pop charts for the next two months, finally coming to rest at #8 for two weeks in June. The song was also a crossover sensation, making the adult contemporary, club, and album rock charts as well.
