Mystery Fleas for Mother's Day....

ModelMom's picture

It's a beautiful warm & sunny Mother's Day here in Portland. My husband had to work this afternoon but this morning he made us a pancake breakfast and gave me a beautiful gift. So things started off really well.....

....until we started noticing that somehow a family of fleas has decided to make themselves at home in our house. The strange thing is that we have 2 outdoor cats who never come inside, they are treated with Advantage flea killer and upon a good looking over they don't seem to have any of the bloodsucking parasites on them.....so where are these little nasties coming from?

I have vacuumed our entire downstairs three times so far this morning and they still keep jumping up in a full force attack of our legs...hmmm.....what to do?

I mean, it's Mother's Day! I just wanna relax without feeling like some primate picking off fleas from my body and my sons little legs! I hate fleas. Very freakin much. And I am the neat/clean freak of the Universe which only makes this slightly more disturbing. Mini vampires! Get outta my house!

But you are a primate, milady ...

... I guess John Donne's poem, written when the flea was just something you had to live with, won't be for you.

Maybe you can get hubby to catch a couple and take them to a pest control service or entomologist. Not all fleas are created equal, and identifying the flea will help identifying where they came from.

How long have you been in this house? Cat fleas can lie dormant in carpets for several months (at least) - so you might be getting a little surprise from a previous owner.

out out damned flea!

ModelMom's picture

i hadnt thought about catching them and showing them to an exterminator. good idea. i'll do that, as they seem to prefer me over my husband.

we bought this house brand new....so i dont think they are from a previous owner.....and my cats are flea free....i havent done any researchon these critters but perhaps there is a variety that lives in grass and we have tracked them in the house after playing outdoors? i am going to have to go look this up.

as for jon donne, only he could romanticize the flea in such a manner! :-P iwould not have fared well in an age of fleas, rats, slop buckets and lack of any sort of hygiene.....

If there's a major outdoor plague of these things ...

o ceallaigh's picture

... then you won't need to postulate a "special kind that lives in grass". Just your standard cat flea (I read that that's the usual kind that hits dogs these days - an expert will know better) that's being shed onto everything and anything and is being tracked into the house.

And where was the carpet stored before it was laid down in your new house ... ? (I'm just full of things to make you paranoid today, eh?)

Happy ... oops, I was going to abbreviate Mother's Day with MD. That wouldn't work for you, would it? :p

LOL oceallaigh!!

ModelMom's picture

oh i am sure the MD had a very happy MD throwing back some daiquiries and ignoring her beeper. bah!

i really dont know where the carpet was stored before....but we've been in this house for over a year and last spring & summer were fine save for a few ants. actaully the ants were a nuisance, we had a lot of hills in the yard....we had orkin come out after trying several "natural" methods and now they are gone...onlu to be replaced by the fleas. my husband thinks that the orkin guy planted flea eggs on his last visit since our one year contract for the ants expired and that way they could keep our business. i thought he was joking, but maybe not.......

nah, tell your hubby ...

... that, in the bug world, it's best not to attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by persistence. And fleas can be damned persistent.

Speaking of bugs, I wonder if that pest control agent does bobs. I suggest an aggressive, round-the-clock regimen of Care Bears cartoons and Barney videos.

I trust you are refering to the "bob(s)" of the suddenly and mysteriously MIA Anominus_Bob? I understand that he lived in the desert area of Cali...people go missing all the time out there in the big old inhospitable desert...

I can not believe the heartlessness that is being directed at a organism that is simply struggling to perpetuate its species life-cycles...and this from those that consider me EVIL...Well,I Never!!Evil_Bob
