My world is disappearing.

Tottie's picture

The world changes - buildings that were once important are now gone. The world as I knew it has gone.

I often reflect on how the buildings which I have had associations with during my life are being demolished. It's odd, when the buildings my mother who is quite elderly, is associated with are still standing.

Let me explain.

The primary school where I spent most of my early schooling was demolished to make way for a major shopping complex. The Girl Guide hut that my father built with the assistance of other fathers has been demolished an a housing complex was built on it.

The second high school I attended, would have been demolished by now, but for its historic significance, but it is a shell of its former self as the government attempts to find someone to use the building and maintain it.

The office complex where I first started work - is gone for a shopping complex in the city.

I did my nursing training at a country hospital - it has been revamped and in its place is a luxury accomodation block - both the hospital itself and the nurses quarters.

In that same country town, I was married. The old church which had historic significance has been demolished and is now a complex for retirees.

In contrast much of the infrastructure that my mother knew as a child is still standing. The schools she attended, the church in which she was married, and the houses in which she lived most of her life.

Strange the way it turns out.

disappearing world

It's kind of sad, isn't it? I don't have such a drastic experience, but several years ago I went to the neighborhood I grew up in. All the playgrounds were gone, just some grass and dirt left where they used to be. It was shocking, like that world was supposed to freeze in time for me.

It is a bit of a shock

I remember going back "home" years ago after a long absence and I cried and cried. All the wonderful open paddocks (fields) with quaint old farmbouses had been converted to boxes - new housing estates without trees, and without character. It is sad - but "progress".

Our disappearing world

Yes, unfortunately a lot of it is going. The hospital where I trained as a nurse has been torn and a glass and steel monstrosity put up in its place. The nurses quarters, too, though they were not replaced. I have a 'Memorial Brick' complete with certificate of authentication from each of those buildings, once so inportant to me.
