"MYSPACE" : What you don't know: PLEASE READ!!!

My sister goes to a public high school in Michigan. Last week all of the students were given a letter to take home that explained some things about MY SPACE that you may not have known.
First, My Space is being used by colleges world wide to "research" students. They can tell a great deal about you by what "your space" says.
Many colleges have reported that they were happy to use this as a source because it shines light into the "real" person.
Second, the letter stated that predators are using MY SPACE to prey on teens. This is not the average scenario of an adult preying on a child, this is men and women, some in their early 30's using this as a source to offer high school students pretend jobs, money, cars or clothing. The student thinks the adult seems really "cool" and decided to befriend them. Three cases have been reported in the Detroit area of teens being lured into underage pornography, photography or drinking and drugs.
A few days ago one Michigan man was caught with students of a highschool sports team. He had bought them liquor and encouraged them to have sex with their girlfriends at his home. The students were unaware that this man had video cameras in his bedroom and was recording everything. (For more information on this trail contact Wayne County) The students were shocked to discover that this man, who they considered to be their friend was doing this. In fact, the students all refered to him as "cool", "fun" and "just like them" - - now you tell me, why is a 38 year old man "just like" a 17 year old? Red flag. The parents of the children thought of this man as a mentor. They thought he was a real man's man who wanted to teach their boys as a father would. He had lied to the parents faces telling them whatever they wanted to hear so their boys could stay out late and party.
Before you think that this couldn't happen to you or your kids, think again. He got all the info he needed from MY SPACE.
In another paragraph, the letter talked about robbers using MY SPACE to target homes in their area. Apparrently they can use your profile to find out where you live and based on your hobbies they can determine the kind of income you/your parents have. They will then email you questions that seem to be innocent but they are really trying to find out when nobody is home.
My mother wanted to see for herself what this was all about. She went to MY SPACE and created a fake account with false information. With in 30 seconds of completing her account she had 3 responses. All were men wanting to know if she was available.
Parents, please. Check out my space. See if your kid has an account. explain this to them.

Thank you for the information
Many of the teenagers in my family and all of their friends are on My Space. I've never thought of these possibilities, and I bet that their parents have not either. Thank you for the information, I will pass it on.
Teens have the wrong set of attributes to be unleashed online
They are gullible, hopeful, trusting, and have rarely confronted a con. They need more life experience before they can safely open the pandora's box called Internet.

Not the newest news, but
sound advice nevertheless. Thanks for posting this. The problem stretches far beyond MySpace--parents have been warned for years about actively involving themselves in their children's use of the Internet to prevent this sort of thing with ANY online service. MySpace just happens to be the popular drug du jour for online offenders. Ugh.

this happened recently in hawaii where some guy met a kid on myspace and got arrested for inappropriate behavior. it seems like no matter what certain types of people infiltrate whatever trend is occurring.
Randomsun,
Thanks for the post. I don't think people truly realize that this is a world wide thing!
