My Son's First Night in a Big Boy Bed - or Why I Didn't Get Much Sleep

family life | home and family | raising children | two-year-olds

Last night was my son's first in a "big boy bed." For my kid, the "big boy bed" is a new twin sized bed, which is a very big change from his crib. At two-and-a-half, my son was long overdue for a move to a bed, but since he's always stayed nicely in his crib, I delayed in making the change.

After shopping and choosing a nifty captain's bed which has drawers underneath and a book case headboard, it arrived yesterday. Unfortunately it's arrival coincided with major construction on my son's room. The people who lived in our house before us as knocked out the wall between the two smaller rooms. My son has had the whole space to himself, but come November he will have to share that space with our second child. So we are replacing that wall and restoring the two rooms. I say "we," but really my extremely handy father is doing the work and various other family members are helping.

Anyway, so not only did my son have to deal with a new bed - one that he can climb out of - he also had to handle all kinds of changes in his room. As a result, it took a lot of getting up and some threatening before we all had a restful night.

One thing that was really funny was that apparently since I've never been able to get into my son's crib, he was sure I couldn't get into the bed with him either. So when I crawled up there to read him a story, he started laughing. "Mama, you are too big," he said. "Go out!" It really surprised him to see that I wasn't too big after all.

Boy am I tired today!

Cute!

Your son sounds so cute! His observations are very sharp too! My son will be 2 next month so we've been looking at twin and toddler beds....but I think I'll keep him in his crib as long as he can stand it. He likes it so far and hasnt tried to climb out yet (knock on wood!) But I do fear his first few nights in a big boy bed! I hope you all have a restful night tonight!

Thanks!

He is pretty cute, which is why I don't kill him.
We're having a battle again tonight. We just put him in time out in his crib because he keeps getting out of his bed. He's pretty ticked right now :)

Uh-oh!

LOL! I say the same thing about my son...it's a good thing he is so cute otherwise I'd have to put him up for auction on ebay! :-P

Your little guy will get the hang of staying in bed soon enough.....I have a lot of freinds who say it has taken them about 5 days to get their toddlers to stay in their big boy/girl beds. I've also heard it is nice because you get to sleep in a little more in the mornings since they can hop out of bed and play in their rooms rather than holler to be let out. My son wakes up and yells "help!" in the mornings. It about gives me a heart attack every time! LOL!

Also, my best friend's son who is 2 and a half still sleeps in a crib but he can climb out of it and does so all night long! So crib or bed....I think at this age they just figure out escapes no matter what!

I think climbing out of a crib would be much more dangerous

At least if they climb out of a bed, it isn't too bad. Not too far to fall.

My son used to yell "Help" too! Now he just says, "Wanna get up, Mama." Even though Daddy's been getting him up most mornings for months now. For a while he would tell Daddy, "No. You go out. Get Mama. You are not the best." Nice. The last few days he's been saying "Daddy, you look good!" Much better.

Actually last night he got out of bed himself, since of course he could. He said something like, "Wanna get up Mama. I getting up!"

:)

LOLOL!

That is the cutest and you guys must love hearing that little voice and all the new things he says!

If my son tries to climb out of the crib, that is the day I am getting him a bug boy bed. That just seems like too much of a height to fall. My friend's son is the most nimble child I have ever seem though and you can't even hear him climb out...no thuds, bangs, nothing!

You never, ever know...

...what's going to come out of his mouth, let me tell you.

Last night he fell out of the bed between the bed and the wall. It scooted out. He fell UNDER the bed, and was sitting there crying. Amazingly enough, he was never really awake and went right back to sleep. We have to rectify that today!

poor guy!

i was just going to post and ask you how the sleeping was going! it's great that he didnt really wake up after the fall....otherwise he may have been too scared to go back to sleep. oh man.....who really knew that motherhood would mean sleeping with one eye open ( and both ears! lol!) all the time!?

I swear I hear him breathe at night

It is amazing how in tune we are with our kids.

As far as the sleeping goes, he takes a while to go to sleep. I think that it's getting a little better. He is still sleeping very little over all, which is frustrating because he is clearly sleep deprived. As am I...

Thanks for checking!
