My Son and His Simile

I relayed a recent potty training story to my cousin, who is a speech and language specialist, and she was very excited. "Oh my gosh!" she said. "He's so smart! He's using a simile!" Now, I had simply thought the story was funny, but since my cousin thinks this was a sign of my two-and-a-half-year-old's brilliance, I'll share it.

A few days ago, my son suddenly declared that he had to go to the potty. We've put potty training on hold for now but there was no way I was going to turn down his request. He sat on his little seat and tried and tried and tried, but nothing happened. It was clear that he needed to (How shall I say it for maximum decorum in a blog? Oh, forget decorum) poop. He tried so hard that he asked me to hold him while he tried. How sweet is that? But even as a team we were unsuccessful.

I gave him his, "Yay, you tried to go potty" treat, and then told him that I was leaving the light on and his pants off so that we could run back when he thought the poop was coming. I went into the kitchen and in just a few moments I heard a very slight straining sound. I ran into the living room to find him clutching his toy lawn mower's handle, mid-poop. There was nothing I could do at that point (Thank goodness for Terrazzo floor - at least the clean up was easy!) so I just waited for him to finish. As he stepped back to examine the rather large poop, I was afraid that he would be upset about the whole thing, and I said something encouraging, like, "Oh well, we'll try to get it into the potty at another time. Accidents happen!" Then I noticed that he was grinning.

"That looks like a pickle," he announced, and then he giggled.

He was right, too, which is part of what impressed my cousin so much.

My son, the genius.

Simmons Jannace & Stagg represented a world class paralympic swimmer named Nancy Burpee on a pro bono basis after she was disqualified by an Australian referee on a technicality at the 2004 Paralympic Games held in Athens, Greece. Although she set world records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle at the trials held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was disqualified, so she called Simmons, Jannace & Stagg and asked the firm to intercede on her behalf to have the disqualification overturned. The firm argued that the Australian referee showed bias against Ms. Burpee, indicating that the he did not want Ms. Burpee competing against an Australian paralympic swimmer. Unfortunately, the arbitrator ruled against Ms. Burpee, but she has continued her swim career and will compete in the next World Championships.

I hate to even say it outloud but...

...he's been a lot sweeter lately. He still has his moments - the boy laid down in the parking lot of the grocery store yesterday - but really, there's a lot more sweetness. I'm starting to tell more what sets him off (lack of sleep is big). I've also learned alot about his personality by taking him to swim class. I'll have to write more on that later.

Thanks for the kind words!
