My People Waste Nothing!

The closest grocerie store (within walking distance) is an over priced market my brother and I lovingly refer to as the "Mexican store". It's a place where all non-English speaking folks can find food from the Mother-land. You know, the stuff most American's wouldn't eat on a dare! (including this wet-back!)
Well, for simple things or when I can't use my brother's car, I go there rather than the dollar and more store. While I had the car last night, I thought I'd drop in for a couple things and for the first time really looked at their meat department. *Gag* I really wish I hadn't done that!
First, there was the smell of rotting meat that can only be detected when you're standing right at the counter. And, given how my sense of smell isn't what it used to be......well, uh, you do the math!
Next, there were the items in both cases - the butcher case and the pre-packed case. Er, what exactly would one do with cow feet??? And, call me a snobby American, but there just aint enough liqour in the world to get me to eat a pig's snout! We'd seriously have to be post-nuclear war, the rest of the food is long gone and the only thing left is pig snout, cow feet, intestines, chicken feet, and pig & cow tongue! Oh, and did I mention the cow stomaches and pig hearts????? *shudder* I kid you not! I swear one of those pig hearts MOVED when I looked at it! But, my personal favorite was the bin labeled "cow guts" - I swear I'm not making that up! In the display case was that lovingly phrased sign marking the pile of oozing.......*shudder*.....stuff.
Oh, but let me actually rephrase that secerio a bit. Ya, the food's gone AND I've already cannibalized the weak and dying survivors I've been sheltered with! And, even then I might decide to try fasting for awhile!
I mean, in our wastful world, I should be looking at this as a sign of how people survive when they're left with nothing. But, the only thing to race through my mind was - "My people! You're in America now! Step away from the pig snout! McDonald's is around the bloody corner and no longer do you need to eat this crap or starve!". But, to my shock, despite the foul odor, there were many surrounding the butcher case waiting to be served.
My God, no wonder so many of my people drink too much! You'd need to be drunk to eat that shit!

Spooky...
There are certain ways of cooking those parts, I'm not really big on them but they can be quite a treat if given a chance. lol! (drumroll! shocking) You should go around more, you'll see that most people don't just eat those because they don't have anything else to eat but because they can taste good. lol!
Menudo, Alone
is a popular Mexican dish (yes, folks, not just a boy-band!) that my brother LOVES, but I cannot bring myself to eat. It is a stew of cow guts *shiver*. I just can't do it! If it was once on the inside of an animal and did things like process urine - I just can't do it! I am totally the most WHITE Mexican you'll ever meet! Seriously, I belong with the anglo's who turn their noses up to most ethnic food. I love to try new things, but if it contains any kind of animal guts - DON'T TELL ME! I'll never even try it! LOL

I love menudo. lol!
Sorry, Alone
Sorry if I spilled the beans on what's in Menudo! lol But, what it really comes down to is that I love to try new things, go to new places, etc. But, when it comes to food, I am not terribly adventurous!

Hey Spook
Ever think about becoming a vegetarian? There are so many things out there that don't require a death and a butcher and really...there are good meat substitutes when you get the craving for animal flesh....We eat a lot of lentils...Indian Dals....split peas....and tons of other veggies and fruits.....there is an entire world of wonderful veggie stuff and none of it once lived inside or outside of somethng that breaths, eats and deficates.
Ms.Zola!
It's good to see you! I promise to get right over to your blog! Anyway, I have thought about it, actually. Not as a perminent thing, but to lose as much meat from my diet as I can handle doing (I just love a good burger!) Here's my problem! It may seem simple to someone doing it already - but I can't get a handle on the cooking! I've never been good in the kitchen and the vegitarian cookbooks I've read leave me mystified! I don't know what most of the cooking tools ARE or even what most of the ingredients ARE. So, that leaves me with the few I can understand and most of the time they're dealing with veggies I don't like or something else I don't like. I thik I need a class or something.

Spooky, you're not alone
My people eat something similar. You may have heard of it. It's called haggis. Here's what it is, in case you are unfamiliar:
A Scottish dish consisting of a mixture of the minced heart, lungs, and liver of a sheep or calf mixed with suet, onions, oatmeal, and seasonings and boiled in the stomach of the slaughtered animal.
In case you are wondering, suet is the hard fatty tissue about the loins and kidneys of beef, sheep, etc., used in cooking or processed to yield tallow.
YUMMY! This stuff is so good, the FDA won't allow it to be imported into our country because of possible diseases that you could get if it's not prepared properly. Now, I've actually tried it and...it wasn't bad. I don't know that I'd eat it again, but it wasn't terrible.
Come and see what I'm rambling about now
Haggis
Oh yes, I know what it is. Not that my family ever served it, but I'm half Scottish. I tried to find one in Philly one year when my middle son had a "bring a dish that represents your culture to class" thing. I figured they'd all expect him to bring in tacos, so being a smart-ass I tried to have him bring in the nasty Scottish dish! I didn't find one, but would have tried it if I had.
All three of my boys, by the way, would beg me for a dollar everyday so that they could buy fried chicken gizzards after school. *YUK* But, I figured it was their stomaches, so why not? They even knew what they were!

Now that's heresy!
Gizzards is good eats. :)
Ms.Zola, if you have a recipe for kung pao tofu, I'm sold. SERIOUSLY! I tried it once and loved it. I could do a vegetarian diet without a problem, but I have never managed to fix tofu properly. And yes, I know there's a bunch more to a vegetarian diet than tofu, but I actually like the taste and can't fix it, and that irritates me. lol

just can't do it!
The corner store in our Philly neighborhood sold little paper bags of the gizzards for a dollar a pop and that was their after school snack of choice. My only real issue with them eating it so often was that they're deep fried! And, at the rate they were going, their own gizzards would look like those of 80 year old men by the time they turned 20! LOL
I'd love to figure out how to make some real vegitarian meals. But, the books really do confuse me and there are SO many steps! Why can't they come up with good, vegitarian meals for lazy people????

Intricategirl, you'd find
paradise here in Portland, on Hawthorne. That's where all the hippies hang out and you can also find some over priced organic food stores. In fact, I have some hippy friends who would love to share some tofu recipes. A few of them own a cafe on Hawthorne called "A Chance Of Rain" and they make the best tofu burritos you will ever find!
Come and see what I'm rambling about now
ROFL!
The only thing hippies are good for is serving as pinatas. ;) That being said, I think I just dislike them because I am am rebelling against my own hippie tendencies. lol

YES!!!!!!
#1 of 2 things I'm teaching the kid ~ "nobody likes a hippie". Followed closely by ~ "pie makes everything better". The latter used to be "money makes everything better", but have found pie solves all woes!

Spooky,
Apparently Sean likes hippies. ;) :D Instead, you need to teach her the proper group to hate. Mimes. NOBODY likes mimes. I think mimes even hate mimes, and they do it out of some self-loathing thing.

Spooky, don't forget
to teach her to hate mormons, too! Oh shit! Did I say that out loud?

Ehhh,
in fact, just teach her to hate everyone. Goth is making a comeback.

Oh dear god no! As if emo wasn't bad enough! Where's my gun?!

ug, mimes!
Ya, this is true, IG. My only problem with it is how young she is and how she'll probably confuse them with clowns. The thing to remember here is that I have the best weapon against little-kid-lying in the world! Very soon now I'll be able to begin teaching her "whenever a kid tells a lie - somewhere in the world, a clown DIES". Talk about an awsome way to keep the little ankle biters from lying!

what you mean. Sometimes, these mofo's need to take a shower. But, I take them with a grain of salt and that helps me to see that they, the ones I know at least, are good people.

You're welcome AR!
I popped into this store for my little adventure right after voting. And, while the beginnings of this post were swirling through my mind while I checked out the 3rd world like selection, it was forgotten by the time I got back and began watching the election coverage. Pretty exciting stuff, huh? My poor brother was bored to tears - downstairs on his computer and forced to listen to every moment of the election coverage! But, I'm enjoying the hell out of it!

I'm With You
Good post Spooky. You sound alot like me. I'm Chicano and I would never touch that stuff. The pig snouts caught my 4 year old sons eyes about a month ago at the local supermarket and he noticed right away that it was a pigs snout. He made me laugh though when he said that he was going to shoot the people who killed the pigs. Anyways, yeah, if you don't grow up eating it you are not going to like that crap. I understand some people eat it because they think it taste good but I'm with you, I'd rather hit the local Burger King or something.
Excellent, mr,hobbie!
I'm glad there's another latino out there who agrees with me! My brother only laughed at me and swears up and down that I used to eat menudo all the time! Once I found out what was in it, I never ate it again - and that was pretty young. But, it's not like I've never seen stuff like that in a store, just not all at once like that!
My mother quit making a lot of Mexican dishes when we were young because she just didn't have the time to cook. But, we both grew up eating fidello and megas (don't know how to spell that one! LOL) and other simple dishes like that. I call it peasant food. But, my mom did grow up eating all that stuff and to this day I tell people about Sunday's in her home and how it always included cow's brain smeared on tortillas! LOL
