My next goal in life.

For a while now, I've wanted to become a pilot. My parents almost signed me up for lessons when I was younger, but ultimately didn't. I don't know what has restarted this desire within me, but it's something that has come back in full force.
It's not too much to learn to fly, but I worry about costs after that. Owning my own plane is almost definitely not going to happen, and renting one is expensive enough that I might as well sit back and let someone else fly me around while I sip a diet Coke. And why would I be learning? For a profession?? I have no intention of ever becoming a commercial pilot. It would be nice to fly my family on trips across the Atlantic, or across the country, but probably not realistic. If I did it for the experience, a couple grand for training seems ridiculous considering I can get a good used motorcycle and "fly" in a completely different way for the same amount.
I've always been one that likes learning for the sake of learning, but my financial sense just isn't backing up this particular dream.
Maybe someday.

I did ground school ...
... because a high school teacher offered it as a course. I didn't finish though. I was a couple of weeks away, when they started talking about the costs of actual flight lessons.
It was "learn to fly" or "go to college".
And you haven't even mentioned the worst of it - the high-flying insurance premiums.
I guess we're all just grounded. You, me, and Harry Chapin.
Hmmm.
Learn to fly or go to college. Not even a decision to make there. College it would be for me too.
Geez. I forgot all about the insurance, but you're completely right. I was just thinking about the fun aspects, of course, which is part of why I posted it. I wanted somebody to bring me back to earth. ;)
I imagined being able to get a few jobs here and there. Crop spraying is big in my area, I imagine, but I'm not sure I can get past my treehugger tendencies enough to do that. In order to transport people for money, I have to have an entirely different pilot license, which means an entirely different fee of several grand. For about $2000, I can learn to fly over the Atlantic. Just so long as I don't need instruments or multiple engines, and don't run into any bad weather or fly at night. Nice, huh? lol
Besides, as someone who isn't bothered by the worst turbulence, and actually considers it "fun," maybe it's best if I stay on the ground. That Harley I mentioned above is looking more and more attractive. lol
