My New Goal : F-Word Quota

I decided I want to stop using foul language so much. I started to keep track of how many f-bombs (and other colorful words) I was using in work today. I was astounded to find that within a half an hour's time, I had already said it 16 times! Tally for 8 hours: 37 times!

I decided 10 is a good f-word quota for the entire day. I can use it when I am mad in traffic, or at work (after talking with the police all day long, you would make F-work allowances too!), or when I am home alone.

I could never say it in front of my parents (even at my age, which is 24), although I have been tempted. And I don't really like to swear around my friends, unless if I am putting extra emphasis on something or if I am extremely angry.

Dropping the F-bomb at work. I can't remember the last time, let alone 37 times in a day. Of course, we're in different lines of work, I imagine.

My bosses are pretty cool. At work I am on the phone ALL DAY LONG (wearing a painfully annoying headset) dealing with potential emergency situations (I monitor and dispatch for police, fire, and medical alarms). I like the job, but it can be very frustrating, hence my foul mouth, lol. I never really swore that much until I became a dispatcher.

F-word

Knot Says:

Wow, that's a lot of F-words... I don't think I even say it once a month anymore.

I couldn't imagine saying such things at work, either. Good luck on the quota, I guess. :P

There is a funny character

JohnnyP5379 Says:

There is a funny character in A Million Little Pieces who is trying to quit swearing. I think he put himself on a quota also. I wonder if James Frey made him up.

F-word quota

gom jabbar's picture
gom jabbar Says:

Whoa! 37 times? Strangely enough I never tried counting, even when I was swearing a lot more than I do now. A change in work environment cured me of that in a hurry. Most of the people I work with are at least 10 years older than I am and are fairly conservative, so swearing just isn't acceptable. I still swear when I'm alone but not nearly as much as I used to.

Good luck with your quota...

I've actually gotten worse with age

o ceallaigh's picture
o ceallaigh Says:

When I was a kid, I refused. Of course, I was working the grounds on a golf course, and kids and adults alike would use the f-bomb 37 times in a sentence. But I was going to college and was convinced I'd never get there with language like that. Not because they'd refuse my application for language but because I would be drawn, quartered, further dismembered and buried under the cellar of my own house if even one slipped out. :) Eased up a bit in college and graduate school. Then had kids, though, which clamped down the lid hard. Nowadays, the computer had better not do something typically MicroSoft or *#*#* @$(#&#* &()$&#)( #$$%$$#@!!!

There was a radio ad for a language course that opened with "People judge you on the basis of the words you use". They're right. The ideal would be to have the control to use the appropriate language in the appropriate situation. But once you've acquired the f-bomb habit, it's hard to break ...

I forgot about my computer, lol

Swear words

simpleman Says:

Just join advertising and see how your swear words double. At times i feel it relieves a lot of stress to let loose a few expletives.

March 16, 2006 - 5:13pm

funny you mention that

pchan33's picture
pchan33 Says:

I always thought if I decided to pursue something other than psychology it would be advertising, so it is funny you said that. :)

The f-word - I hate it.

Tottie's picture
Tottie Says:

I don't use it, really don't like hearing it at all. I worked as a psychiatric nurse for a while and refused to acknowledge the patients who used it to me. They learned. I'm pretty determined on that. I don't like the word and avoid anyone who uses it.

March 16, 2006 - 5:14pm

hmmm

well, that is certainly understandable. I have certain words that I don't like as well.

F-word

Ivy Alexander Says:

I use to abuse the F-word too! I am sure everyone notices I use friggin' alot... I think it is ok in some situations, I allowed it a few months ago with my youngest teenager...

There was a 13 foot snake out by our pool that was not a family pet... He slid right over her bare foot out of nowhere... "God Mom thats a big f#%@!ing snake!" Well, how can I punish her she was right it was a big f#%@ing snake!!!!

So try this... just when you feel your upper teeth press down on your bottom lip to form the letter "F" stop right there and say friggin' It broke me!

I saw in a movie (The Man) Samuel L Jackson took Eugene Levy's advice and added "rying out loud" to the end of "the f word", which makes it "fuckrying out loud!" lol.

F-word. Nice Freudian slip. :)

And I'll bet they did notice. March Madness is on or there might be an office pool to see how long it will last.

I try hard not to use it. I never do at home, and really the only slips are with my boyfriend or friends that also swear. My boyfriend would rival your 37 times NO PROBLEM! He uses it in everything he says practically. I should try pinching him every time he says it or something. It's not like it sound intelligent or anything...
