My Daughter is Charged Up

batteries | family life | preschoolers

My preschool daughter is obsessed with batteries. I think double As are her favorite. She loves to walk around the house with them clutched in her hand. And putting them in and out of the box is a real treat.

Apparently our child locks aren't what they used to be and she can fit her little hand in the drawer and fish them out. She's obsessed with it. It's bizarre.

I'm wondering what the potential dangers are of her messing around with batteries. These are new ones, not old corroded ones. If she keeps them out of her mouth and is gentle enough with thme that they don't break open or anything, are they really dangerous? I mean, they SOUND dangerous, but are they really?

mine does it too

Though, not obsessively. She'll just carry them around if she happens to find one. I doubt there's much danger if they're not corroded. But, I still take them away from her anyway. I'm more afraid of her swallowing one!

me too!

That's my thinking, too! Swallowing batteries = bad. She's 4. The one I refer to as the princess of darkness.

Ya, Brenna

She's an odd one, alright! I was just explaining to wisegal that she actually turns down CAKE. CAKE!!!! And, while she's turning down cake, she'll be asking if she can "eat your eyeballs".

kids would come in with "swallowing" batteries...and it can kill them. DO NOT LET HER PLAY WITH BATTERIES!! Also make sure that if she has played with batteries she washes her hands very well. I am not trying to scare you...but I AM trying to scare you:( Ya know?

Wow, thanks!

Good to know!!!!!

I don't know why, but I

I don't know why, but I think many kids are fascinated by batteries. Maybe it's because they see how they go in things to make them work. The most you can do is try to keep them out of reach. As your child gets older, hopefully the fascination for batteries will stop.

yea, we moved them around in the drawer...

She can squeeze her hand in there despite the child lock so hubby moved all the batteries to the back. Hope it works.

Thanks, y'all!
