My arthroscopy posts - the explanation why?

arthroscopy | huttriver10 blog | keyhole surgery | operation | quicker healing

My arthroscopy posts were precipitated by my forthcoming knee cartilage operation.

Our local ACC branch( our state owned accident compensation corporation)has approved my operation and I just have to wait for the private hospital provider to set a date.

It is commonly called 'keyhole surgery' and entails basically two or three holes being cut in my knee to allow a minature camera down one, and the surgery through one or more other holes.

This sort of operation enables quicker healing and rehabilitation as well.

Twenty five years ago I had my other knee operated on in what is called an 'open' operation.Just a long incision which opens up the knee and enables the surgeon to see all - but takes many weeks of healing and rehabilitation.

In these types of operations the large muscle above the knee - the quad - just deterioates to almost nothing and a lot of exercising is necessary to get it back to normal size and strength.

With arthroscopy there is not so much deterioation to the muscle and you are back on your foot in days.

That is the theory of the situation in any case - lets hope the reality is the same.

It is, Hutts

I know someone who's had this very operation and he explained it as being really simple. His scar - two on each side of the knee cap - were about the size of a quarter or smaller. I actually need this operation, but in my case it's no use. Both of my legs are hyper-extended (birth defect) and due to the muscles continually stretching and causing my knee caps to "float", the cartilage in both knees is shot. But, since to fix this problem it requires major, reconstructive surgery - that I DON'T qualify for! - there's no point in doing this little one when it'll only keep happening.

Good luck with yours! I'm sure it'll go really well!

Hutts, my Ex had arthroscopy to regrow the

cartilage in both his knees (he'd broken both knees in high school football and had it removed at the time). His arthroscopy was done over 20 years ago and the surgery itself went smooth as silk. It was done as an outpatient procedure so he went home the same day and the two little incisions on each knee healed quickly and with no trouble whatsoever. Due to the nature of his surgery he had to stay on crutches for 13 weeks for each knee (they did them one at a time) and he wasn't allowed to put any weight at all on the knee during that time. But that was because they were actualy regrowing the cartilage. The entire procedure was a great success and well worth those 13 weeks on crutches. Well, maybe not, since he no longer had anything to whine about, but that's another story. LOL!

Anyway, I'm sure that type of surgery has gotten much more sophisticated over the years and I'm sure that you will have great success with your surgery, as well. I'll be sending you healing energy for a quick and successful recovery.

Thankyou Pussy....

you will have me healed in no time. Haven't got a date yet, but should be next month. My first op was an open surgery and took weeks to heal - the rehab took a while to regain the quad muscle above the knee. This one should hopefully take little time. Thanks for your kind thoughts.
