Music: What I Listen to When the Wiggles Aren't On

Music: What I Listen to When the Wiggles Aren't On

As I've mentioned in a previous entry (Mommy vs. Me: Music, Television, and the Divided Parent), I love music. I'm listening to music all the time. I'm listening to Barney sing "Icey Creamy Ice Cream" currently, but that's not my choice.

I've got a few bands in my IPOD right now that I can't get enough of. I love Evanescence, although it's been an eternity since I've heard from them. They put out a live album/DVD, which was nice, but mostly of course it's just live versions of the same songs that I've listened to 30,000 times. My sources on the Internet say that the new Ev album is coming out in August. They've had huge problems, filing a lawsuit against their manager for sexual harassment and one guitarist had a stroke (supposedly he's recovering well). I'm looking forward to hearing from them again.

Evanescence has moved up onto my short list of long-term favorite bands. I've been a Pearl Jam fan for more than 12 years. PJ is the one band that my husband and I both like, and we've spent a couple of anniversaries at PJ concerts. I'm actually a member of the Pearl Jam fan club, which sounds hugely dorky (and maybe it is) but it gives me access to the best tickets for their concerts without having to spend heaps of cash on ebay or sleep out at a Ticketmaster. Unfortunately I've really not been listening to much PJ lately. I should update the IPOD. I'm really into music I can sing along to right now, and even when I can understand lead singer Eddie Vedder, he rarely sings in my key.

Tori Amos is also an artist that inspires my loyalty. Her first three or so albums are just earth-shatteringly good. The piano is breath-taking, the lyrics are shocking, honest, and wonderful, and her vocals are beautiful and full of emotion. While I own every Tori album, musically we started parting ways on the "Orbiting" portion of "To Venus and Back." She was doing lots of experimental stuff there, which is great for her, I guess, but it meant that only a few songs on that disc were my cup of tea. Unfortunately since that album I've found that her music doesn't have that lasting quality for me. It's also morphed from alt rock to adult contemporary, which I guess is understandable but also isn't my thing. I'll probably never leave the Tori fold, and I'm sure I'll still attend her concerts when she comes my way, if only to be wowed by her amazing piano-playing skills and beautiful voice. I'll still hope for a sign of her previous spark - the one that hooked me forever.

Other bands that are passing through my fancy include Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and Flyleaf. Maroon 5 just have some seriously catchy stuff out there. I like how the singer/song writer weaves in adult themes without (generally) having the song be entirely about them. Just like in life, sex colors his songs but doesn't define them. Classy stuff. Kelly Clarkson just kicked out an awesome, danceable album as well. I've almost played it out, which happens for me with most music eventually (except Evanescence). But it's still really, really good.

Flyleaf is a little-known band which combines a hard alt-rock sound with unusual lyrics. While still addressing the pain, mourning, and love-lost type of lyrics that are the staple of alternative rock music, Flyleaf subtly weaves in a Christian outlook. They don't smack you over the head with Jesus, they just let you know how their life is influenced by him. In most cases, it's well done.

I like my music to have passion and enthusiasm, and I like the content of the lyrics to be reflected by the music. You may not be able to understand Eddie Vedder, but you can feel the emotion of the song from the delivery of the lyrics and the music. In my opinion, that's what music should be about.

The Wiggles, Tori Amos

Have you stolen my life? I unfortunately listen to The Wiggles so much that I find myself singing their songs even when my children are asleep. Yikes!

I'm also a huge Tori Amos fan and have been for many, many years. I also feel the same about her albums, but I do very much like the one that A Sorta Fairy Tale comes from (don't recall the name). The song Taxi Ride is a favorite from that album.

I'll have to check out Maroon 5, never listened to them.

Scarlet's Walk

Scarlet's Walk is the Tori album that A Sorta Fairy Tale is on. Yea, that one has some good songs on it. Maybe I ought to get that one out again. I like Taxi Ride alot too.

How funny, "have you stolen my life," LOL!

Have you heard of Charlotte Martin? She's been compared to Tori a lot. I've heard her version of Wild Horses, it's really pretty good. I'd like to give some of her other songs a listen.

Maroon 5 is different, they are a bit harder rock although certainly not hard rock at all. And the lead singer is kinda cute :)

And just to get you going...
"Fruit Salad, yummy yummy. Fruit salad, yummy yummy."

Mwahahahahaha!

Ha ha!

Still, the Wiggles are better than Barney, music-wise. Don't you think?

You are an evil woman!

I'm going to have to listen to soooo many songs to get that out of my head now, grrr!

I haven't heard of Charlotte Martin, I'll go look her up now. I don't really keep up with music anymore, unfortunately. But I have been making a habit of turning some on when the girls go to bed. It's so nice to have "me" time.

Yummy yummy yummy-yummy fruit salaaaaaad!

oops

My reply wound up in the wrong place. Look up!

Music For All Times

I have a wide range of likes and a few dislikes, but Tori Amos is great I agree. I like music for the moment, When I'm writing, I need something not very intrusive or catchy or I start singing and toe tapping rather than working. If I have to sweep etc. I need uplifting music. The kids think Bob The Builder fits this category, but I prefer Black Eyed Peas or Madonna. Music is such an emotional thing for me and soI am pretty fortunate in that I have A CD addicted husband with a huge collection and I can choose the music to suit my mood. I pretty much have a Wiggles free household on the stereo, but the TV program is a bit of a hit...mumumusic with Murray...

No CDs

No Wiggles CDs here, just the TV show. Actually right now we're big into Barney, with a touch of Bob the Builder and Thomas the Train. The Black Eyed Peas are pretty good, but "My Hump" is just awful in my opinion. I'm also not into the new Madonna. Too disco-y for me. I've only heard the one song, though, so maybe I'll be impressed by the rest of it.

Thanks for the comment!

Saccarine Barney

We are also a Barney free zone. I cannot stand the saccarine kids, the fake smiles and the over the top messages. We have seen the show of course. My kids wanted to know why everyone was pretending to be soooo happy all the time. Bob the Builder music is a bit of a staple, but we have made up kids collection CD's of all kinds of music for us and the kids. Included are songs like "Yellow Submarine", "True Colors", "If I Had Words" a few Sesame Steet songs etc. Technology has come to the rescue especially in our multi-age household.

"My Hump" is poor I agree.

Barney-free zone

Little Einsteins

I also cannot stand Barney. Luckily I don't even know when it's on. My daughter is addicted to Little Einsteins, which is a new show on the Disney channel. It's not bad, classical music and whatnot. Not annoying like a lot of other shows. I think my husband is a big fan, too!

Oh yeah

We've seen the Little Einsteins. They are pretty cute! My son is becoming a big fan of Clifford the Big Red Dog as well.

LOL! The Wiggles!!!

My son just got into them......oh boy. I know all the lyrics now. Defintitely been initiated into motherhood now!! :-)

We've drifted out of the Wiggles

Now that we have the Noggin channel, as well as On Demand stuff, my son has gotten much more broad in his likes. Dora, Diego, the Backyardigans (who are damn cute) and various others are favorites. Interestingly, he'll sing Wiggles songs every once in a while out of the blue. He never sang them when he watched it, but now that he doesn't watch the show, it's like he stored them up and every now and then they come out. Weird.
