Mom Guilt

I'm suffering from major "Mom Guilt" as I listen to my toddler laugh at yet another showing of the same inane Teletubbies episode as I try to get some work done. The stupid yellow one is trying to get an orange inflatable ball out of the world's smallest puddle. My daughter is "reading" a book but glances up frequently to laugh at the show.

My kids are watching way too much television lately. As my daughter's upcoming hospitalization looms, I'm finding myself with more to accomplish than there is time left to do it in. Especially work - I'm trying to write week's worth of articles in days... We fly out to a hospital across the country on Tuesday night to begin a "day program" in which they will test her up one side and down the other as they try to figure out her extensive allergies and GI problems.

At least my children are physically fit, very active, and find unique and interesting things to do while the TV is on. We talk about their shows together and we do something outside the house - and away from the TV - every day. Still, when you hear all the anti-TV stuff on, well, the TV... it leaves me with a truckload of Mom Guilt.

Maybe I'll resolve to turn off the TV here, at least sometimes, when we return from our trip. But I doubt things will change much. I'll still be overtired from late night work and even later night health care issues with the girl, my son will still have sensory integration disorder, possibly ADHD, and whatever else it is that causes him to rarely stop moving, making noise, and generally driving me insane, and so on.

Long live the Teletubbies!

Well at least you can monitor what they watch

Brenna, and they will be ok once all this is over you will be able to go back to, hopefully, a better way of life,...just hang tight. This will seem like forever to you but it's so worth it. Finally some answers, no?

Thanks sassys

I hope to leave the hospital with my daughter on July 10th with some concrete answers and a plan. I hope they don't just tell me she's got extensive food allergies and terrible acid reflux, because I know that stuff already, lol. But if that's it, and there's no underlying disease, well, that can't be too bad either.

The boy, yes, knowing why the boy is so @#!$ annoying sometimes is helpful for sure. I'm more sympathetic when he can't stop moving or goes insane over something little like a drop of water on his shirt (or, heaven forbid, being asked to wear long pants or khaki shorts to church). I try to take a deep breath and think, "He just can't help it..."

Thanks again for the comment!

is he older or younger then his sister?

older

He's 4.5, old enough to understand that sister is getting lots of attention and that she's really sick even though she doesn't always look it. He told me that he didn't want her to "go and be with God" which is, of course, our way of talking about death. YIKES. So I hope that some of the intense vocal tics, over-the-top energy levels, and anxiety will be relieved when we return. He's actually flying up to join us (With daddy) over the fourth of July weekend and then he's going to stay with me, the baby, and my mom until we return the following thursday. What he doesn't know is that, if sister turns out to have a disease, I'm going to try to have him tested too while we are there. But we'll keep that a secret, eh? LOL

Yikes Brenna!

This could well be why he is so hyper no? A little worried and a little scared can translate to a lot of misbehaving. Ya know? Bad attention in a child's mind is better then no attention...he doesn't understand why he's not the top priority right now. I hope all is well soon. I bet his ADHD disappears when this medical stuff is all cleared up.
