3G Technology
As 3G technology becomes more widely available, new possibilities will open up in mobile communication. Knowing what you can expect out of the technology and services will help you make a better choice when deciding on a 3G handset.
What is 3G?
Put simply, 3G is a set of standards for mobile communications.

Successful 3G implementation requires:

1. Standards for services

2. Service provider infrastructure

3. 3G-compatible handsets

4. 3G services from your service provider.

The standard which allows for all these components to work together is known as WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access). WCDMA allows for data

transfer speeds of up to 2 Mbps in local-area applications and up to 384 kbps in wide-area applications. More bandwidth means faster data transfer and more new services. WCDMA is the real heart and soul of 3G and providing WCDMA access to the greatest number of users is a major focus for service providers.
In a nutshell, 3G creates new opportunities for you to communicate with others in better, faster, and more flexible ways.
Your needs
Mobile service providers currently offer various voice and data services over their networks. Many new 3G services will expand on existing capabilities, while others will introduce capabilities you've only dreamt of.
You'll still be able to use the services you love, plus new ones. Voice services will be crisp and clear and getting connected should be easier than ever because 3G technology increases the number of calls that can be carried. SMS and MMS services should also benefit from the increase in bandwidth.
Note: Get a handset that will meet your needs both at present and in the near future. That way, you'll have a great tool that will grow with you as service offerings increase.
High speeds
The biggest news about 3G is that it offers substantially faster data rates, making it easier to do some of the things we can now do using GPRS services. Connecting to the Internet and downloading pages, documents and graphics will be significantly faster.
Note: A good 3G handset should still give you access to all the services you are used to using, such as SMS, MMS, Bluetooth, GPRS.
New services
More bandwidth is opening up a new world of possibilities. Streaming video over 3G networks is allowing operators to offer video-on-demand services for on-the-go viewing. Video calls allow mobile users to conduct live conferences with the office or share special moments with distant friends and family. Higher speeds mean you can shop for music online and download it directly to your handset.
Note: The more information you keep in your handset, the more important it is to back-up your data. Several software programs can help, including Nokia PC Suite.
