Saturday's search for the missing whippet, Vivi, ended without a sign of her. Fifty searchers did their best to catch a sighting of the small brown-and-white dog.
On Sunday, breeder Bo Bengston and co-owner Paul Lepiane flew back to their respective California homes to await word of any new information. The Port Authority can no longer spare an officer to escort Vivi searchers around the property, effectively ending the owners' ability to search.
Airport officials and Delta airlines will continue their own searches of the airport's 4900 acre property because having a loose dog on the grounds is considered a safety hazard. Someone will check the five baited humane traps every day in hopes of finding something other than the feral cats and wild animals that have already been captured.
The cargo areas where Vivi may be hiding are as big as shopping centers and are heated, with many comfortable places for a whippet to rest. With an abundance of wildlife for catching and eating on the property, and easy access to water, Vivi may live incognito for quite some time.
On a good note, a limo driver confirmed a sighting of the missing show dog in one of the cargo areas on the day she disappeared, which means that Vivi did not drown in the marshy areas when making her escape, which has been a concern.
