Mike Post "Theme From Magnum, PI"

Pop Go The 80s's picture

Although not a household name, it has been estimated that composer Mike Post has scored over 1800 hours of American television shows, including Hill Street Blues, The Rockford Files, The Phil Donahue Show, and L.A. Law. If you watched television in the '70s or '80s, his music was inescapable (and remains so today through syndication).

Those credits just scratch the surface of Post's accomplishments though as he has also performed with Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin, played guitar on Sonny & Cher's hit "I Got You Babe," won numerous Grammy awards, and co-wrote/produced Joey Scarbury's #2 smash "Believe It Or Not." Post has also had the occasional hit under his own name as well including Top Ten singles for his themes from The Rockford Files and Hill Street Blues.

In April of 1982, Post charted with his last Top 40 hit when his "Theme From Magnum, PI" made the charts. The driving instrumental was heard in the popular detective series set in Hawaii and starring Tom Selleck. It peaked at #25 on the pop charts and made an appearance on the adult contemporary charts as well.
