Men At Work "Overkill"

Of all the new acts to burst onto the music scene in 1982, none took the US by storm like the Australian band Men At Work. With irresistible songs like "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under" - and aided by popular videos - the quirky band notched several hits from their Business As Usual debut, which spent 15 weeks at the top of the US album charts. Cargo, the follow-up to that album, was actually finished and ready for release by late 1982, but the continuing success of Business As Usual forced it to be delayed until the spring of 1983.

The highly anticipated album was preceded by the release of "Overkill" in late March. Truth be told, anything Men At Work would have put out at this point would have been a hit, but "Overkill" was undoubtedly one of their finest moments and equal to anything on their debut album. Tinged with melancholy, the song nonetheless featured a soaring chorus and quickly became the group's third consecutive smash.

Entering the US Top 40 in early April, it was a Top Ten hit by May and would remain so for two months, eventually reaching #3. With the mania surrounding Men At Work in full bloom, "Overkill" also reached the Top Ten on the adult contemporary and album rock charts as Cargo sold better than three million copies in the US.
