Madonna "Borderline"

Although she had several club hits dating back almost two years, in April 1984, Madonna was only a couple months removed from her first mainstream pop hit when "Holiday" reached #16. That song had come from her self-titled debut as did the follow-up, "Borderline."

With the same playful dance style of "Holiday," "Borderline" was also infused with a childlike innocence and sweetness - two traits that would be far less prevelant as Madonna became a worldwide sensation the following year. The song's bouncy keyboard melody and urgent chorus were infectious, but the song slowly climbed the pop chart when it was released as a single in March.

"Borderline" would finally enter the US Top 40 in April and spend nearly four months there, becoming Madonna's first Top Ten hit when it reached #10 for a single week in late June, The song also became her first single to be embraced at adult contemporary radio, charting at that format as well and helping her debut album become a platinum-selling, Top Ten hit.
