Lovesick

He's a story I wrote. It's just story. The format might be a little screwed up, but it's cool.

Love-Sick

Trent pushed open the passenger door as he saw Adam emerge from the shadows of his apartment complex. “What is up? he asked leaning out the door.
Adam began to pick up his pace then paused a moment. He looked back into the shadows, shrugged it off, and hopped in the truck.
They stared at each other in silence. In silence, until a smile came across Trent’s face. “Long time no see. he said.
Adam nodded and looked back towards the apartment complex. Trent and Adam had been best friends in High School, but as the years and empty promises past they lost touch, but Trent couldn’t blame him. Adam had been in a relationship with Jill since graduating and going on three years. Trent had long since giving up on him, until tonight, when Adam called.
“You ready? Trent asked.
Adam smiled and nodded. “Yeah, let’s do it.
“That a boy. He punched the accelerator. And with that their night began.

Trent slammed down the remnants of his drink and raised his glass. “Barkeep?
The waitress rolled her eyes and walked over to the table.
“What’cha need honey?
“Four more and two shots of tequila
Adam shook his head in defiance, as he chugged down the rest of his drink to keep up with Trent.
“I don’t like tequila. He said with a gasp as the alcohol went down.
Trent shrugged, “It’s time you picked up that left nut.
Adam shook his head violently to get the blood flowing back to his brain so he could think clearly. Trent sat on the other side of the table and seemed to be staring into space. For a crowded bar, it was quiet between them. Adam began stacking the empty cups on their table into two high columns, while Trent shred a napkin to pieces.
“So how are you and Jill? he asked, finally breaking the silence.
They had all been friends in High School until graduation. After graduation Jill and Adam went to the local Community College and Trent stayed to work for his Dad’s Construction Company. Although it was never spoken Trent sensed that after that day he had received a demotion from ‘Best Friend’ to ‘Mere Acquaintance’.
Trent didn’t much mind though. Trent understood. He wasn’t the most attractive guy in the world but he knew how to handle himself. He didn’t wear his heart on his sleeve. There was a quiet confidence in him. He was threatening in a way. Adam lacked these qualities and he knew it.
Adam watched anxiously as the waitress set down their drinks and shots. Trent slipped her a twenty dollar bill and waved off the change. The waitress smiled and walked off.
“How about that waitress, man? I’d fill her up, Boy. She’s got a kid though.
“How do you know? Adam asked.
“I just know.
Trent looked down and swirled his drink in his hand. Adam looked back at the waitress. She was resting against the bar smoking a cigarette. Her eyes were staring at Trent though a stream of smoke. They were longing and desperate eyes. When he turned back to the table Trent was holding a shot of tequila in his face. Adam tried to resist but Trent persisted, till he reluctantly took the shot and waited for the toast.
“To you and Jill, and eternal happiness. Hopefully, one day I will find it, wherever it may be.
With that said Trent took the shot in one gulp and chomped on a small piece of lime. Adam’s didn’t go down as smooth, but he managed to choke it down and slammed the glass onto the table. To prevent dry heaving he chewed on his slice of lime for a good half a minute. Trent laughed and handed him a bourbon and coke.
“Here, wash it down with this. Cheap bourbon whiskey cures all.
Adam took the drink and took a generous swallow. After a few deep breaths he felt better. The alcohol was beginning to take effect.
“So about you and Jill? Trent asked.
Trent and Jill had dated in High School. After they broke up, Adam was the next man in line. At first there was tension but Trent squashed the feud after a few months. He wouldn’t let something beyond his control ruin his friendship with Adam or Jill. He had only to wait till they went to college for that to happen.
Just as Adam was about to open his mouth, Kermit walked up to their table hooting and hollering the whole way. Kermit was a local bar hound and a fellow co-worker of Trent’s.
“Trent you horses ass. Where the hell you been?
“Over at your girlfriend’s house. Trent said with a smile.
“I can’t blame you. That bitch is finer than frog’s hair. Kermit chuckled.
Trent looked at Kermit’s queer face and they both began to laugh. “Kermit, this is my buddy Adam. The one I was telling you about.
“So this is the whipped motherfucker, huh? The one castrated by Cupid’s arrow. The name’s Kermit.
Adam shook Kermit’s extended hand and sat in silence as Kermit and Trent caught up. Afterwards, Kermit turned his focus onto Adam.
“So lover boy what are you doing out?
“What? Adam asked.
“I said why are you out? What‘s the occasion?
“No occasion, just because.
“Bullshit. Kermit howled. “There’s always a reason. A girl doesn’t just let her man go out for the hell of it. And if she does, her man either treats her like shit or there’s a reason. You don’t look like you got it in you to set a woman straight. What’s the reason?
“No reason. Adam insisted.
“Okay. Kermit replied.
Adam could see Kermit’s smile through the clear plastic cup just before he took a swig of his drink. Trent just shook his head and the conversation dissipated after he decided not to add to it. He could see the anger rising in Adam’s face.
Adam was rather perturbed by Kermit. It was not his place to pass judgment on his relationship. Who the hell was he? He didn’t know anything about him or Jill. Just as well, Adam secretly peered under the table at his phone to see if Jill had called. She had not. Kermit stuck around for a little while longer, till he finally strolled off to go pester someone else.
“Don’t worry about Kermit. Trent said. “The last ass he got was when his finger slipped through the toilet paper.
Adam and Trent both laughed and ordered up another round of drinks. Although everything seemed O.K., the rest of the night Adam’s thoughts were elsewhere.
Adam didn’t consider himself a jealous person. He understood the dance, and the vital the role trust played in a relationship. Sure, he had caught Jill in a few conniving situations, but nothing life-altering. He had always been faithful to her and as far as he knew, so had she. He never questioned it.
Trent gave the waitress another generous tip, which she took graciously with a smile. After watching her walk away he turned to Adam. Adam was slouched over on his barstool.
“So you happy with Jill? he asked after spitting on the floor.
Adam swayed a little on his barstool and tried not to look drunk. “Happiness is all in the mind, dude. It’s what you make of it.
“So what do you make of it? You didn’t answer my question. Trent asked.
Adam rolled his head. “Jill’s my whole world.
“You ever thought of cheating on her?
“Well yeah. Everyone’s thought of cheating at some point. I would never do it though. Jill’s my whole world.
“You know, if you’ve thought about it, she probably has too.
Adam shrugged and wagged his finger in Trent’s face. “No way man. She wouldn’t do that.
“So you trust her?
“Yeah.
Trent put his head down and decided not to mention it.
“What about you? Adam asked.
“I don’t have desire to mess with relationships anymore. They’re too much. If I wanted to deal with bullshit all day, I’d become a rodeo clown.
“You just haven’t found the right one.
“The right one is just someone you can tolerate; and someone who can tolerate you. Trent said.
“You haven’t found the right one, because you’ve never tried.
Trent looked up at Adam with obscure eyes.
No. It’s because the right one for me doesn’t exist.
They sat in silence for a good while. Trent went to take a leak while Adam busied himself trying to stay atop his stool. When Trent vanished Adam checked his cell phone to see if Jill had called. She had not.
Trent emerged from the Men’s bathroom and wobbled back onto his barstool. He noticed that Adam had ordered two more drinks. Why, he didn’t know. Trent lowered his head and gave it a shake, to stir his wits. Adam’s eyes were shifting back and forth, watching him. He was trying to focus, but try as he might, he could not.
Trent took a deep breath and pushed back his hat. “Remember Ashley Jacobs?
Adam gave a blank stare.
“The girl I dated for about six months after Jill?
Adam nodded.
Trent took a deep breath. “I’ve never told anyone this. He sighed and went on. “One night back in High School we were supposed to go on a date. But that night I stood her up, because some freshman girl wanted to jump my bone.
Adam followed along as best he could.
“Anyway, she got all upset and ended up coming to bar like this one. She was drunk as hell and barred out of her mind at the time. It wasn’t surprising what happened. Later that night some piece of shit took her home and raped the shit out of her. When he was done, he left her naked and passed out in the bed of some truck. Trent paused for a moment and stared at the table. “Afterwards, she fell apart. We never spoke again and she never came back to school. Remember? I felt awful. Trent blew out a deep breath. “She was the only girl I ever cared about.
Trent put his head down. Adam kept a firm grip on the table to keep himself from crashing off his barstool. Adam wanted to say something but he couldn’t find the words.
“Let’s get the hell out of here. Trent said pulling his hat over his eyes.
Neglecting the rest of their drinks they both stumbled out of the bar and into Trent’s truck. Trent opened the passenger door and pushed Adam inside. After fumbling for his keys he started the engine. Adam rested his head against the passenger window to try and stop his world from spinning.

Shoulder to shoulder Trent carried Adam to the front door of his apartment. The door was locked. “Hey where are you’re keys? Trent asked slapping Adams face.
Adam blinked his eyes and came to a moment of clarity standing at his front door. “In my pocket.
Trent swore under his breath and patted Adams pockets. He straightened up and pulled Adam aside. “Get out of the light. I don’t want someone to see us and think I’m jerking you off through your jeans.
After fishing up Adam’s keys they stumbled inside. They were quiet as could be, so as not to wake anyone. Trent trudged with Adam through complete darkness to the door of Adam and Jill’s room. Trent paused for a moment then gingerly reached and turned the knob. Almost instinctively, at that moment, Adam perked up and pushed the door open. There was a frantic commotion inside. Adam flipped the light switch on.
They both stopped in their tracks. Adam stared as if he didn’t comprehend. Trent stared in disbelief. There was a long silence.
Jill was on her knees with some guy towering over her; naked as the day God made them. They had managed to find momentary space in the surprise of the door opening. She had a look of frozen horror on her face as she knelt motionless in the corner. The guy stood erect, at the foot of the bed, cuffing his hands over his “Gonzo nose. The quip smirk on the guys face is one Trent will never forget and one Adam will never know. He never looked at the guy. He only stared at Jill’s wide eyes.
“You said you were staying the night at Trent’s house. she said in a quivering whisper.
Your whole world just came crashing down, Trent thought to himself. It was so quiet, that for a fearful moment he thought he might have actually said it out loud.
In a fit, Adam pushed Trent off of him and stumbled towards Jill and hunched over her. Maybe it was from his drunken state or maybe it was from taking in the whole sight before him, but suddenly Adam clutched his stomach and began to vomit uncontrollably all over Jill in the corner.
